Visit our web site: <http://home.earthlink.net/~lkreider/>home.earthlink.net/~lkreider/ ---------- Celebrating the 100th anniversary of powered flight In October of 1902, the Wright's new glider had a mind of it's own, dipping in unpredictable ways. On the night of Oct 2 Orville drank more coffee than usual and lay awake for a long time. The curious performance of the glider was on his mind and a perception dawned on him. When Wilbur awoke the next morning Orville told him the solution. if they made the vertical rudder move the machine would turn under control. It seemed their two minds had become one and Wilbur immediately recognized Orville had solved the final problem. They rebuilt the vertical rudder as envisioned by Orville. It moved with the wing warping conceived by Wilbur. On October 8, Wilbur kicked off from the summit of the dune in perfect control and making a long S turn. He flew nearly 300 feet. Thus, was born the three axis controls that is used in airplanes from the Wright Flyer to the Boeing 747 to the space shuttle and every aircraft flying in the world today. Wilbur remarked that the secret of flight was control and not power. Oct 13 , 1902. Wilbur remained in the air practically stationary for 43 seconds, "about three times the best of anyone else."

    3. Hi Nancy & Brian, My grandfathers were shoemakers! George and son David Runkel. George was the son of William Runkel. I have documentation of them living in Lebanon County. We never knew where or when they may have learned the trade. Is there a place I can get more info on the A. S. Kreider & Co. shoe factory? I plan to go to the Lebanon County Historical Society tomorrow. Thanks for any help. 3. The following was taken from the Biographical Annals of Lebanon County BIOGRAPHICAL ANNALS OF LEBANON COUNTY Page 333 & 334 AARON SHENK KREIDER, proprietor of the A. S. Kreider & Co. shoe factory, Annville, one of the large and important industries of that place, stock company, and of which he is both president and general manager. This concern turns out boys', youth' and little gents' shoes, and has already gained a prominent position in the trade. The other enterprises with which Mr. Kreider is prominently connected are the Lebanon Valley Savings & Loan Association, of which he is president, with headquarters at Lebanon, and the Washington Mutual Fire Insurance Company, of which he has long been a director. He has been treasurer of the Pennsylvania Shoe Manufacturers' Association since its organization September 19, 1899, and director and member of the executive committee. Mr. Kreider has a happy home and is surrounded by a family of intelligent children. On April 26,1885, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Bucher Horst, who was born June 16, 1864, at what is known as Horst's Mill, half way between Schaefferstown and Cornwall. Mrs. Kreider is the daughter of Henry Horst, who was born at Horst Mill, which he later owned, the property having ben in the possession of his father and grandfather. It is one of the historic old homes of the county, settled very many years ago by German pioneers. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kreider, as follows: Ammon; David Robert; Aaron S., Jr.; Henry H.; Alfred Joseph, who died in 1892, aged two years; Clement; Howard; Nancy; and Elizabeth. Perhaps Mr. Kreider's first interest outside of the welfare of his family and the development of his large business organizations, is in the German Baptist Church, of South Annville, in which he is active, and to which he is a generous contributor. He is also a trustee of Elizabethtown College, and institution controlled by that denomination. Mr. Kreider's great business success must be regarded as but the just result of clear-headed judgment and business foresight, combined with executive ability of an unusual order. Aside from this Mr. Kreider is an honest, upright man, whose reliability and integrity are far beyond question, and he has not only gained, but has held, the respect and esteem of business associates, employes and personal friends.
