Hi Marjorie Were there any Shay's from Lebanon County in your book? Thanks, _JeanieG731@aol.com_ (mailto:JeanieG731@aol.com)
I purchased the CD from Heritage Books, Inc. and the title is "Lebanon Valley, Pennsylvania History & Genealogy" by Robert A. Heilman. As I recall, the price was reasonable. Their web site is www.heritagebooks.com. I purchased it in hopes of finding my gr-gr-grandfather, but to no avail. I did find some of his relatives, however. Good luck! Thank you, Betty, I turned up the reference on Ancestry.com by using my ancestor's name but, as you can see, Ancestry.com is not always accurate since the name actually listed was Johan. I cannot fit him into my line. The first reference I can find to Frederic Kristoff Bilger, my ancestor, puts him in Erie, PA in 1800 AND in Columbiana, OH where I know he eventually owned land but family records suggest that he came before the Revolution. I find it hard to believe that Erie was a port of entry for immigrants in the 1750s -- but would welcome any intelligence to the contrary. So far I have no other clues about where to look. Nancy, I think you are right about your posting on Bethlehem Steel. (My Great-Aunt worked at the Lebanon division of Bethlehem Steel for many years.) But I'm still not finding anything connecting Pittsburgh-Des Moines Corp that Donna was seeking to Lebanon, PA. Per http://www.steelplantmuseum.org/beth.htm Bethlehem Steel acquired American Iron & Steel Mfg. Co., Pennsylvania Steel Co. and Maryland Steel Co. with steel operations in Lebanon and Steelton, Pa., and Sparrows Point, Md., coal mines in West Virginia and iron ore mines in Pennsylvania in 1916. Per http://www.mindat.org/loc-3653.html There was a series of three mine openings (Big Hill, Middle Hill, Grassy Hill) located at Cornwall, near Lebanon. Started 1740 and owned by the Cornwall Ore Banks Co. (1864) and later, the Bethlehem Steel Co. Per http://paironworks.rootsweb.com/lebanon.html there were many iron works in the Lebanon, PA area, but Pittsburg and Des Moines Iron Works isn't listed. Hi, If you will permit me to comment - There were at least two other newspapers, the Lebanon Valley Standard and Der Libanon Demokrat but I'm not sure how they fall in, timewise, with the Lebanon Daily News. Der Libanon was around at least from 1832-1864 and the Standard in the 1870's. Perhaps someone else out there would know the exact dates.
