UNITY BAPTIST CHURCH was organized in the Village of Harlansburg, Pennsylvania in the year 1808. At that time the area was still a part of Mercer County. Today, 1996, the Village is situated in the Township of Scott, Lawrence County. The Church was constituted in the house of Thomas Clark with 12 members on September 17, 1808. Meetings were continued from home to home until a hewed log structure was erected on the opposite side of the road from where the present Church now sits. The present structure was built in 1850. Since that time many improvements have been made to the building. On February 26, 1992, fire destroyed a large part of the inside of the structure. The Church was rebuilt and rededicated on September 20, 1992. The present Pastor is Rev. Jerry Davis, who in July of 1996, also became the Manager of the Cunningham Funeral Home in Harlansburg. There are several excellent histories written of the Unity Baptist Church. I am fortunate enough to have copies of two of them. The Centennial History printed in 1909 contains many photographs of prominent members of the Congregation. According to the history, in 1835 George Bruce was employed to post and rail the old graveyard. Both the old Baptist / Methodist and present Unity Baptist Cemeteries are very well maintained. Many of my ancestors are interred in both; including the families of BRUCE, COPPER (Clark Copper was a Deacon at Unity Baptist), DEAN, LOCKE, McCASLIN, McELWAIN, RICHEAL, and STRAWHECKER, just to mention a few! >From family records I've secured and maintained over the year, I was able to include additional information to the tombstone readings; including more complete birth, marriage and death dates, military service and maiden names of spouses. I would be pleased to receive additional data from other descendants to make these records even more complete. Dwight Copper RD#1, Box 100 E-Harlansburg Rd.
