In October of 1897, the Poorhouse was destroyed by fire and the 16 inmates escaped without injury. "The average number of inmates since the poor farm was established has been about twenty. Many stayed but a short time and went away. The buildings are located near the old Pittsburg Road, in Shenango Township, about three miles southeast of the city of New Castle. The institution is sustained by a tax raised by the people of the city." - History of Lawrence County, 1908 by Aaron L. Hazen
