My first post to this list. Interested in in the Fisher, McDowell, Gibson, Brown and McCrearys of Hickory and Neshannock Townships, Lawrence Co., PA. According to several histories of Lawrence Co., my Fisher ancestors settled in Lawrence (then Mercer Co.) ca. 1800. The family built many of the first saw, grist and carding mills around Eastbrook from 1806-1817, the town itself perhaps founded by, certainly built on land once owned by the Fishers. The family opened the first general store in Eastbrook in 1835. John Fisher served as its first postmaster. Various branches of the family married Gibsons, Browns and McCrearys among others. Further info can be found at my web site at http://www.ntsource.com/~autx. Very interested to learn if any documents, maps or photos exist in Eastbrook or elsewhere describing the early years of the town other than the standard records available from the Lawrence County courthouse such as deeds, wills, marriage, birth and death certificates, and etc.; items perhaps archived by a town clerk or historian. Am particularly interested in any items that mention the Fisher family. Finally does anyone know when the first newspaper in the Eastbrook was published, if newspaper records from the 1800's still exist, and whom to contact regarding these records. Thanks Much, Stephen Fisher

Looking for information on these three families that lived in the New Castle area in late 1800's to early 1900's. Eva Hopes born in Ohio, married an unknown Donaldson they lived near Mahoningtown. Eva and Mr. Donaldson had a son Raymond Morton Donaldson. Raymond was born on May 10, 1903 or 1902. His father died while Raymond was a child prior to the taking of the 1910 Census. After the death of her first husband Eva returned home to Hubbard Ohio to live with her mother Mary J. Hopes. She worked as a Nurse in the Ohio Works Plant for US Steel. She did eventually remarry to a Frank Cartwright who was from the New Castle Area as well. Frank worked as a Supervisor at the Ohio Works Plant. My Grandfather said that his father, Raymond, had a Uncle but he had never met him and his father had not seen him since he was a child. Any info on this familt would be appreciated. I am currently waiting for a copy of Raymonds obituary, birth certificate and death certificate. When I get those I will try to add more to this. Thank You Tammy

I am looking for information on a Donaldson who married Eva Hopes. The marriage took place before 1902. They had one son Raymond Morton Donaldson in 1902 in Mahoningtown, PA (Near New Castle). Eva was born about 1880 in Ohio most likely near or in Hubbard. In the 1910 Census Eva is living with her Mother Mary J. Hopes in Hubbard. Raymonds father died very young while Raymond was still a child. So I know that this unknown Donaldson died between 1902 and 1909. I have been told by my Grandfather, Raymond's only son, that Raymond may have had an Uncle but he doesn't know what became of him. Raymond married a Isabell Bycraft of Youngstown, OH. They had 3 children Betty, Jean and Charles. Jean and Betty have both passed away. My Grandpa (Charles) also has said that Eva was a nurse and that she worked at the Ohio Works US Steel Plant where she met he second Husband Frank Cartwright. Any help on this family would be appreciated. Thank You Tammy

When I clicked to add to the list there was an error. What information is required to add to the list. What proof is to be offered. I have various relatives in cemetaries but will have to research my information to know just what to list. Please provide guidence. A reference to the type of information needed would be helpful. I am glad to see that Lawrence County is now up on rootsweb. A major step forward. Donna Maxwell Bailey
The response to our call for surnames, cemetery listings and war heroes has been great. (Please keep them coming.) Thanks so much to everyone who's sent something in. Here are some new things just added to the site - www.rootsweb.com/~palawren Cemetery pages. We've compiled enough headstone listings to add some new pages to our cemetery list: Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery, Savannah Cemetery, Pleasant Cemetery, Oak Park Cemetery, North Plain Grove Cemetery, Mt. Hernon Cemetery, Hopewell Cemetery, Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery, Graceland Cemetery, Fair Oaks Cemetery, Eastbrook United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Castle View Memorial Park, and Booher Cemetery. Several of these have only a few listings. But, I'm sure they'll fill up soon. Also, feel free to send in cemetery listings, even if we don't have the cemetery listed yet. It will get added soon. You can reach these cemeteries from the cemetery link on the main page. New Photos! Photos of Ann Price Hammond, Joseph Hammond, John W. and Catherine Mosley White, sent in by Judy Frates. Also, a photo of Andrew Fehrenbach, Jr., sent in by Bea Mansfield. And, the 6th grade class at Highland School (year unknown - about the 1930s, I think). All the students in the photo are identified, see what you think. If you have a photo you'd like to see added - just email it to me (or snail mail it - contact me for the address). Also, Tami McConahy send in two really nice photos of the Eastbrook United Presbyterian Church and Cemetery and the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church. You can reach these two photos from the cemetery page. Ancestral Heroes. This has been a busy section. We've added John William Thomas for the Civil War and about 150 more heroes - mostly from the Civil War, but a few are from the other wars. Check out the link to the beginning of our military section - it's on the right sidebar of the main page. (Also, you may be able to supply more information on some of these heroes - we could use your help.) Pulaski School Souvenir from 1900. An interesting item - it lists the teacher, board members of the 1900-1901 school year. View the school souvenir from the main page. Obituaries. Lots of activity on the query and obituary boards! New obits have been added for: Robert H. Wilson, Mary Gott Tanner, Isabell Tanner, Thomas Braden McConahy, John Herman McConahy, James Ward McConahy, Martha Elvira McConahy McClymans, William Cartwright, Florence Mateer Cartwright, Mrs. J. W. Boots, and Leanders S. Robison. Thanks to S. Slater and Ralph J. Martin. Reach these from the obituaries page. These will all have the flashing "new" sign next to the name. And, speaking of the data boards. We have a new page.... "Queries and Data Boards" this groups all the data boards together in one place - queries, obituaries, birth, marriage, biographies, death, bible records, wills, deeds, and pensions. Reach this page from the right side bar of the main page. And.... as promised ... the beginning of our surnames list. Reach it from the middle column of the main page. If you haven't sent in the surnames you're researching, don't worry, the list will be continuously updated - about once a week. So, when you get a chance stop by the site and send them in. Also, several broken links were pointed out to me (oops - hanging head in shame, here). They should be fixed now. If you find any others (and I hope you don't), just let me know. That's it for now. If you have any comments or questions about the site - of have anything you'd like to add, just let me know. Teri USGenWeb coordinator for Lawrence, Mercer and Crawford counties

These will all be posted to the website later this weekend. I'm working now also on the Lawrence County surnames list. If you'd like have your Surnames listed, just stop by the site and click on the Surnames link in the middle of the main page...... or just e-mail me the surnames you are researching along with your name and any additional information you'd like to have mentioned. Dec 1 2000 12:00AM By Judy Hruska: New Castle News Auto biography: Winter family can trace its roots to early carmakers, the Studebakers Dec 1 2000 12:00AM By Judy Hruska: New Castle News Sherri Fix Winter of Neshannock Township can trace her family's roots back to the Studebaker family who manufactured automobiles at the turn of the 20th century. John, Clement, Henry and Peter Studebaker organized the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Co. to build Conestoga wagons in 1868. They began to experiment with automobiles in 1897. Three of those brothers were named after their forefathers, three German Studebaker brothers who came to the United States in 1736. Sherri shares these ancestors. The family story in America began when Heinrich, Peter and Clement Studebaker came from Germany on the English ship, Harle. The automakers are descendants of Peter, while Sherri's branch of the family tree extends from Heinrich. Heinrich, Sherri's fifth-generation great-grandfather, married a woman whose last name was Kellough. No record of her first name has been found. They traveled west into the frontier of Pennsylvania. Heinrich built a log cabin in what is now Montgomery Township in the county west of Gettysburg. Family legend has it that on March 3, 1756, as Heinrich and his oldest son, Joseph, were clearing their land, the Delaware and Shawnee Indians attacked and killed Heinrich. Storming into the family's cabin, they took his wife and children captive. The other children included Philip, Elizabeth and possibly more. The oldest daughter, Susannah, was visiting relatives at the time. After this incident, they continued to raise her to adulthood. As the mother lagged behind, she was killed. The children were adopted by Indian families and held for nine years. Elizabeth eventually returned to live with the Indians, while Philip and Joseph lived with relatives in Franklin County. Joseph married Mollie Teeter in 1771 and settled in Westmoreland County near Greensburg. During the Revolutionary War, Joseph served in the Westmoreland County Militia, Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Continental Line . He was sent by the government to clear the Moravian Indians from Worth Township, near the Portersville/Plain Grove area. A memorial was later built in Joseph's memory in Moravia. He and Mollie had five children: David, Susannah, Elizabeth, Catherine and Joseph Jr. David settled in the area which was to become the city of Butler. The rest of his family followed in 1793. Elizabeth (1781-1865) married George Meals (circa 1779-1857) and they had seven children: Lydia, Samuel, Mollie, Joseph, Margaret, Susannah and Elizabeth. Elizabeth married Jacob Pisor Jr. and they had 10 children: Daniel Oliver, Henderson, Hamilton, Jacob, Wallace, Emma, Etta, Elizabeth, Angeline and John. Daniel Oliver Pisor was born in Butler County in 1851. In 1901, he moved to New Castle, where he was employed as a tinner. At the time of his death, he was living on Martin Street. After Daniel Oliver's death on Feb. 10, 1918, his obituary stated that "he became known to a large circle of friends who admired and respected him." Daniel was married three times. First to the former Margaret Campbell. After she died in 1878, he married her sister, Adda. After Adda's death in 1893, he married Mary Catherine Baker. Daniel fathered 10 children, five of whom were born to Adda. They were: Gertrude, Angeline, Alta, Edward and Margaret. Gertrude, born Jan. 26, 1892, married Percy J. Rowland in 1908. They were Sherri's grandparents. "I don't remember my grandfather much because he died when I was very young," the 61-year-old Sherri said. "But I remember my grandmother well." Percy was 50 when he died in 1942 following a stroke. Gertrude lived until 1983, dying at the age of 91. The couple were lovingly called Rolsey and Daddy Rolsey by all, Sherri said. They had five children: Mary, Olive, Gladys, Maxine and Gertrude, who was Sherri's mother. "My grandmother made the most wonderful bread and rolls for dinner every day," Sherri remembered. "She stayed with us for a whole year. She was always there." Sherri explained that after her birth, her mother was pronounced dead, but turned out to be in a deep coma as a result of a type of blood poisoning. At first, Sherri was raised by her grandmother. Later, Rolsey moved in next door to continue to help her daughter. Gertrude had married John Fix in 1938. John, now 84, lives with Sherri and her husband, Lee. Gertrude died on July 8, 1999. The Fixes had three more children after Sherri. They are Susan Griffith, John Fix and Denise Royer. While growing up, Sherri said, she was very close to her father. "He convinced me I could do anything I wanted to do. He taught me to run machines and drive a fork lift. I learned to drive on a stick-shift tractor." She also helped her father build a log cabin for the family across Mercer Road from the current Christmas House. "While we were building it, we lived in a one-room 18-by-18 house - my dad, my mom, myself and my sister. While we were living there, my mother had my brother. After we moved into the log cabin, she had my other sister." John bought his daughter two horses and a pony. One of the horses was the vehicle through which she met her husband, Lee Winter. Sherri explained she was visiting a new-found girlfriend to go horseback riding. Little did she know the friend had an older brother. "He was on the tractor along the road and I came riding by and he wanted to meet me, so he made the tractor backfire and scared my horse. So we met and started talking." She recalled the two went roller skating a couple of times, then Winter went into the Navy. "I graduated from New Castle High School in 1957 and then went to work for Universal Rundle," she said. "I married Lee at the end of that year." The couple's daughters were to inherit the matchmaking horse. Sherri and Lee had three children: Leesa, Eric and Abigail. Leesa is married to David Paulsen and lives in Griffin, Ga. Eric lives in Colorado Springs. Abigail, who is married to Gordon Willis, lives in Windham, Ohio. They have three children, Aubrey, Phillip, and Aleecia. (The New Castle Public Library aided in research for this article.)
To Ed and Others, I apologize. The film that I have has 2 vol. covering mainly Trumbull Co. and some Mahoning Co., OH. After the holidays I will request the 2 other films from FHC and offer look ups again. Once again sorry for the false start. Happy Holidays Carole in Ariz
Helen, I have a Mary Etta Smith (my great grandmother) who was the daughter of Charles Alexander Smith and Louise Kauffman, b. 6/16/1882. I believe she had a sister, Jeannette, b. 1885. This is an elusive line, since her daughter was the family historian for many years and they couldn't track Mary's line. We believe the children (Mary and Jeannette) were orphaned, and Mary saw her uncles in the 50's, in the Rosepoint area but I haven't found many clues. Anyone with information on Kauffmans in the Rosepoint or Lawrence Co. area or this Smith family, please forward! I want to invite each of you to come by and see the new USGenWeb site for Lawrence County.... www.rootsweb.com/~palawren We've started out with a few sections - biographies, family histories, obituaries, maps, histories, general Lawrence county info - many links to the GenConnect boards, and the 1887 and 1877 Lawrence County histories that Ed McClelland and Tami McConahy have been transcribing. In the Old photos section, we have 27 photos... Many baby pictures from the early 1900s, some local residents and places in Lawrence County. Start looking through your scrapbooks and albums, I know you'll want to have your ancestors and family represented in the Old photos section. And, we'd like to list your ancestors and family in the Cemetery section. Let's start building a listing for each of Lawrence County cemeteries. Take a look at the Neshannock cemetery listings.... and at Add-A-Grave. Also, we need to build rosters of the war heroes from Lawrence County. I'm going to start working on the Civil War... Please check out the Ancestral Heroes page and see if you have some ancestors from any of the wars - Revolutionary, 1812, Civil, Spanish American, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam....that you can send in. You can reach the Ancestral Heroes link from the main page. And, we have three new "vital information" boards - births, deaths, marriages. These should be great. I know that often I'll run into a small piece of information: an announcement, a mention of a birth or marriage, death info that's just not really enough to be called an obituary. These new boards should be great for this kind of information. You can reach them through the Birth, Death & Marriages link on the main page. Well, that's it. Please stop by and see us. And let me know what you think. I welcome your comments, opinions, old photos, obituaries...... Teri USGenWeb coordinator Crawford, Mercer and Lawrence Counties

Solomon RITZ born ca 1780-85; died before 4 Sep. 1820; married to Mary WISE in 1808 in MD. Just wondering if there still exists a Lawrence County list service. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/lawrence/1877/ Ed McClelland, Alexandria, Virginia.
Hello-- Is anyone on this list researching the above? I have just located on-line the following from the 1880 Lawrence County census: MORAN, Edward & Susan MORAN, William J. MORAN, William & Mary I believe William & Mary to be the parents of my ggrandmother. Her obituary in 1922 refers to surviving brothers, Edward Moran & William Moran of Wampum. And, I know that my ggrandmother's parents' names were William Moran and Mary Ryan. I'd be happy to share any info about my ggrandmother, Mary Moran Phelan Dalton. Margaret
