Shirley, I've seen many variations on spelling for this or a similar name (or names), especially in baptismal records, where spelling was apparently anyone's educated guess. Hank Jones' book on Palatine Families of New York lists the surname "Dather", along with variations (Thater, Deder, Dater, Teator). I've seen others as well (Tieter, Deter, Dieter, etc.). If you have more specifics regarding this family, but don't have access to the books (there are two volumes), let me know; I'd be happy to check for you. Joe Sisson >>> "Shirley Tator" <s_tator@hotmail.com> 03/06/02 05:16PM >>> Hi, I'm new to the list and wonder if anyone would know the German spelling of Tator. It is belived they were Palatines who settled in Columbia Co. Ny. I've traced them back to 1830 and now have reached a dead end. Any information would be helpful. Shirley Tator P.S. I was given this name but do not think it is right. Scheayter. Can not find the name on any web sited. We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.
