Idar-Oberstein is currently in the German state of Rhineland - Palatinate on the west bank of the Rhine river. The city is located on the Nahe river about forty-five to fifty miles upstream from where the Nahe enters the Rhine at Bingen. It's about twenty miles from the border with Saarland. >From the Eleventh edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, published in 1911, volume 19-20, page 947 Oberstein, a town of Germany, in the principality of Birkenfeld, belonging to the grand duchy of Oldenburg, on the river Nahe, 33m. S.W. of Kreuznach, by the railway to Muenster-am-Stein. Pop. (1905) 9669. It is famous for the cutting and setting of agates and other precious stones, an industry which has been established here, and in the neighbouring township of Idar, since the 16th century. The Evangelical church, built in the 12th century and restored in 1482, is partly hewn out of the solid rock. On the hills above the town are the ruins of two castles. See Hisserich, "Die Idar-Obersteiner Industrie" (Oberstein, 1894) My Faeg (Feek, Feg) and Becker lines come from there. Can anyone tell me about Mutterstadt, Germany, sw of Mannheim, Germany. I tried searching on the internet and found very little. Perhaps I am not looking in all the right places. We recently found that our HEIM/HIMES family came from Mutterstadt, Germany and would like to find out about the town. Wilhelm Heim was born May 10, 1715 in Mutterstadt, and his son Francis was born in PA in 1737. Any information will be appreciated.
