Thanks for the suggestion. I actually keep ALL of the messages, because sometimes they contain information that I don't know I need now but might in the future. Getting them in a digest form simplifies the filing and searching process, and saves me having to open 7 or 8 different messages. Besides, receiving the messages separately wouldn't eliminate the long strings of sideways carets. As a general rule, netiquette suggests eliminating all but the essence of a message you're answering, the way I did below. Usually if I ask politely, people take the hint, which makes the list better for everyone, not just me.
