Sorry to bother everyone. But I have a marriage in 1844 that was performed by an alderman. I know there are no marriage licenses from that date, but would there be some sort of record somewhere? I know churches might have it in their registers but what was needed to be married by an alderman? Thanks.
Hi Alissa, Probably, there won't be a record of that marriage but if this Lancaster City you could check the Lancaster County Historical Society archives to see what they may have. Go to http://lancasterhistory.org and follow the links to the archives and see if you can search for the name of the alderman. The actual data won't be on-line but at least you'll know they have some records. I think records of Alderman and Justices of the Peace are rare but they have some. Also, I don't think you'll find anything more from the Justice of the Peace than what appeared in the newspaper.
