    1. Re: [PALANCAS] Baumgartners of West Donegal Twp/Ehrman surname
    2. Hi Sherry. I'm in purple. In a message dated 4/21/2009 10:46:32 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Linda wrote, <My direct line Hannes Ehrman/Ereman resided in Lancaster County, Pa. he died in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pa.]. Hannes Ehrman/Ereman mentions a Hubert Baumgartner in his will. The will was written on 18 March 1773 and proved 5 April 1773. I suspect that Hubert Baumgartner was a grandchild of Hannes Ehrman/Ereman. It is hard to tell from the wording in the will, but Hubert's mother may have been named Canton. I do not have a record of Hannes Ehrman/Ereman having a daughter named Canton who married a Baumgartner, but it is very possible. Can anyone connect the early Baumgartners with the Ehrman family? This is the wording in the 1773 will. I assume that Hubert was a minor child when the will was written. ".....then the remainder of the Money Shall be paid and divided share and share alike, Viz: to JOHN Ereman, GEORGE Ereman, MICH'L Ereman, to CANTON'S children which money or their share Hannes Duth as their Exrs. shall receive and so lay it out to their best advantage till ye are of Age HUBERT BAUMGARDNER and HANNES DUTH, or after age as they follow one after another.> Linda - Sorry to be so long in responding to your message, but I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia over the weekend. I am home now, but the doctor won't let me return to work until Thursday, so I have dug out some old Baumgartner notes to review while I rest up. When I first read your Hannes Ehrman/Ereman died in Warwick Twp, I immediately thought there must be some connection to the Bomberger line from Warwick Twp. The Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County contains an article on one of their descendants, Jacob Cauffman Bomberger, who was born 12/16/1817 at Middletown, Pa. you may want to persue. The Warwick Twp. Bombergers emigrated to the US from Eshelbrun, Baden, Germany, and settled in Warwick Twp abt 1722. A good reference for their history is given in "Genealogical Information Regarding the Families of BRUBAKER, BOMBERGER, FOGELSANGER and various related families", by Elizabeth Shearer Rahn and Claude J. Rahn, Vero Beach, Florida, 1952, page 65-71. Pneumonia ? How awful ! Hope you are feeling better now. Thanks for the information and your suggestions. Interesting that the Warwick Bombergers were from Baden. I really don't know where my Ehrmans were from [it's Ehrman, not Ersman]. My Ehrmans may have been from Baden as well, or they may have been from a German-speaking area of Switzerland. I do think that they were probably members of First Reformed Church of Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pa. At least that's where one of Hannes Ehrman's children was baptized. >From the record below, it looks like the Baumgartners were Reformed as well. This gives some credence to a Baumgartner/Ehrman connection. If nothing else, they were probably the same religion and may have attended some of the same churches. I am beginning to wonder if the Hubert Baumgartner who is mentioned in my Hannes Ehrman's will of 1773 died young. No one seems to have any record of him. As a matter of fact, you are the only person I've ever met who is studying this surname. I'm glad to have met you. The "Records of the Reformed Church, Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1791-1831," translated by Frederick S. Weiser also lists the following baptism: Infant Parents Sponsors Magdalena Christian Baumgardner Daniel Ersman b. 6 Oct 1790 Maria Anamaria Schulerin The above entry has two dots over the a in Baumgardner. Ersman is very close to your Eshman and looking at the above entry, it's possible Maria's father may have been Daniel Ersman. Interesting Jacob Coffman Bomberger was born in Middletown and the above baptism was in Middletown. I could be way off, but might not hurt to look into it some more. The LDS family history library in Salt Lake may also have the original german film for the above church record. I found the original Quickel german record there and it turned out to be quite a bit different than the translated version. I believe I noticed the surname Erisman/Eresman in some of the early Lancaster County, Pa. census records. That's close to the Ersman record you found above. I discounted these folks as being not related to my Ehrmans. However, it is difficult to know for sure given the poor spelling and/or handwriting in these early records. The other fellow who responded to your Baumgartner post, D. Ernest Weinhold [[email protected]] informed me of an Ereman's Mennonite Meeting House near Manheim. I found this very interesting. Although my early Ehrmans seemed to attend the Reformed Church, I suppose some of them could have been Mennonite. Did you ever find out the name of the Baumgartner book his daughter proofread ? I haven't used any LDS records in quite some time. The closest LDS center is miles from my home. It's easier to use the sources available on the net. What do they charge now for a reel of microfilm ? I ordered a reel once, and didn't pay attention to what I was ordering. When I got it, it was totally in German ! I struggled through it, but it didn't help me much ! For years, I have thought the Warwick Twp Bombergers were a totally different line from the Baumgartners I have been researching from Newberry Twp, York County, but now I'm not so sure - especially since mine show up in Donegal Twp in the 1820 census. Page 65 of "Genealogical Information Regarding the Families of BRUBAKER, BOMBERGER, FOGELSANGER and various related families", says "Christian Bomberger, Jr., the second son of Christian and Maria Bomberger, the immigrants. (No record of whom he married). He had five sons. Of the first three, Christian, Jacob and Abraham, there is no record." Could those 3 sons be the ones I'm tracing??? Who knows.... will we ever know.... Isn't this a great hobby :) Ha ! They are probably the ones ! It gets SO hard when we are dealing with families who lived in the mid to late 1700's.
