I recently discovered that my great-great-grandfather, who according to Ancestry was living in Earl Township, Lancaster County in the 1880 census. When I went to the Lancaster Historical Society and checked their tax records, it turned out that he lived in East Earl that year. I doublechecked Ancestry, and sure enough, they said he lived in Earl. I took a look at the scan of the actual page, and it said East Earl Township. I complained to them, and they checked and said that they would fix it, but that it would be a long process. So, if you use ancestry.com to view census record, do doublecheck the heading on the scan to make sure it matches the data in their indexing. It may be, for all I know, that they only indexed one or two names wrong. Then again, the whole township may be mis-indexed.
