    3. According to Phillip E. Bedient, author of a 1988 article in the PA Mennonite Heritage, his extensive research had identified at least 11 distinct Witmer families in the Lancaster area. Six of those families resided in Manor Twp. To quote him, "The Witmer families of central PA present a difficult challenge to the genealogist. A number of Witmer families arrived from Europe during the eighteenth century and took up land. Most of these Witmers were German or Swiss and not all of them could read or write. There were Mennonites, German Reformed, Lutheran, and members of the Church of the Brethren among their numbers." This particular article covered the descendants of John (d. ca. 1728) and Catherine Witmer of Manor Twp - no relationship to the Peter Witmer family.
