Howdy!! I have been fortunate to obtain a great deal of assistance from distant cousins, other researchers for which I am grateful!!! I would like to know if there are any researchers who have info about Andrew Livingston, father of David, husband of Elizabeth Groff. I have no birth date for him, nor marriage date, nor place of origin. The initial place he seems to have been located is Lancaster PA. The other question I have is about the lists which were signed at the time of sucession and revolution. I understand that there was an oath of allegiance list, was there also any listing of objectors, or other who did not participate in the Revolutionary War?? The info I have seen was that David served in lieu of his Father. I would be most grateful for any help along these lines. Feel free to contact me directly also. Betty Edwards
There were three categories of Americans during the American Revolution. The patriots favored separation from Britain. The non-associators were, loosely speakimg disinterested, or were what we call conscientious objectors today. These included the various plain sects in Pennsylvania whose religious beliefs contravened war. There were large numbers of these in Pennsylvania. Several of my ancestors were non-associators. They were disinterested; as long as their religious devotions were not disturbed, they cared little under whose dominion they lived. Some had physical ailments which precluded military service. Those past the age of 53 were exempt from military service. All were subject to fines; the standard rate being three pounds, ten shillings. The loyalists were those who remained loyal to Britain. Many of the PA-Dutch, grateful to Queen Anne for having given them a new life in America, were in this group. Reprisals against loyalists were severe, including tar and feathers and confiscation of property. Persecution, retribution, call it what you will, caused many loyalists to flee to Canada and other parts of the British Empire. I used to run into several of their descendants who wintered in Florida. I asked the first one I met for directions. His reply prompted me to say, "Why, you're a Pennsylvania Dutchman!". He replied, "Yes, I'm a Pennsylvania Dutchman; but I'm from Canada. Hi Betty, There are lists of non-Associators (those who chose not to serve) in the tax list for some townships for the year 1777. Not all of them are there, if not then you should check with the Lancaster County Historical Society to see if they have the non-associators list for the missing townships. In your case I don't' think your ancestor will be listed as a non-associator. The way the system worked was that if someone was a non-assocaitor he was fined and the money was used to pay for a substitute. Since your ancestor provided his own substitute, his son, he probably wasn't fined and probably won't be listed. Your ancestor could be listed as an "Old Man". The draft in Pennsylvania involved people between 18 and 53, anyone over 53 was regarded as an old man. These lists are usually pretty skimpy because, I think, many of these guys were not sure of exactly how old they were (they didn't drive at 16, drink at 21 or retire at 65 so the kind of markers we use to chronicle our life didn't exist in those days). Its also possible that some of these guys didn't want to acknowledge they were over the hill at age 53. There are lists of non-Associators for Manor, Conestoga and Martic townships on our web page. The 1790 census for those townships are on our web page as well. You might check the index to the 1790 census to determine what township your ancestor lived in. The will also be a guide to looking for church records. In the Revolutionary War folder on our web page is an article giving background information on the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania.
