If you have ancestry.com, or a library that has the Virgil White pension file indexes, you might try looking for these men as soldiers. If either one was pensioned, the pension files would have a lot of information about them. You could check for John in the Civil War, since they drafted men up into their 40's. John may have also served in the Mexican War. You might find Michael in the War of 1812, if the family wasn't one of the dissenting religions that didn't go to war. Even then, you might find them in a war if the family needed the paycheck and/or couldn't pay the fine for not serving. Good luck in your search.
