    2. An excellent reference for current townships would be Andriot's Township Atlas. In paper back, it is about $85 or 90 last I heard--may be more, but many libraries have it. I have advised people in classes I teach to get their ancestral counties so they can figure out the likelihood of people in various townships meeting...when they had to travel by foot, horseback or horse & buggy. To find out previous townships in a county, you can combine that reference with a book called the Map Guide to the US Census by Dollarhide (I think that's the title, or at least close to it.) It shows the boundaries of counties and territories as they were in various censuses. You may be surprised to find an ancestor in a census in a territory that you didn't expect because of the way the various territories changed boundaries several times before they became states.
