    3. Dear Bruce, The Warrantee is the first person to apply for the land. He may also be the person who winds up as the patentee. However, the warrantee may sell the land in the meantime & the person who then gets it is the patentee. Ellen (ETHS-VP)

The warrant was the order to survey the land. The patent was the title to the land. The state was the warrantor and the patentor; the person applying for the warrant was the warantee; and the person applying for the patent was the patentee. The warrants were transferrable; and were often passed down from generation to generation; and, it is my understanding, could be sold.
