Hi, I'm on vacation and staying near Elizabethtown Lancaster Pennsylvania. While I'm here I would like to see if I can find any information on some ancestors who were born here in about 1840. I'm fairly new to family history and thought I'd ask if anyone knew which office I might find early records in. (actually, I'm not sure which kind of records existed at that time, so maybe I should also ask what records I need to look for). Any help would be greatly appreciated. You do not say how much time you have or what exactly you are looking for. If your ancestors lived and died in Lancaster County, then I would first go to the archives of the Lancaster County Courthouse and look up wills, intestate records, and deeds. The archives are on the ground floor of the courthouse in the old section and which is on the corner of E. King & Duke Streets in Lancaster. If your ancestors died somewhere else, then I would look for birth records and church records by going to either the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (located on Rt. 30 east of Lancaster, next to the Tanger Outlet Mall) of the Lancaster County Historical Society ( located on Marietta & N. President Avenues on the west side of Lancaster). Ask the staff for help at all locations.
