    1. Re: British Emigrants in Bondage = Pertinent Convict information

    3. Chey, & others = Ref. to Emigrants in Bondage, and what the codes mean. British & Irish convicts transported to America. ( From the Forward Index ) It will be appreciated that the lists presented in this volume are very highly condensed from original records and are intended principally to show the researcher where to look for further information. Eash entry is therefore constructed as follows; [A]. Surname and Christian name(s) with aliases where given in original document. [B]. Parish of Origin. ( Where none is shown the original bills of indictment should be consulted). [C]. Occupation or status. ( Most often shown as "labourer" in original documents and therefore not translated). [D]. Sentencing court, offence, and month, and year of sentence. [E]. Name of transport ship; place, month, and year ( if known ) landed in America. [F]. English county in which sentenced. Names have been listed in alphabetical order of surname according to modern spellings and the entries are cross-indexed where necessary. The month and year of sentences themselves provide adequate reference to the relevant original records. Occationally an entry will show a date of transportation but without a date of sentence. In these cases it will be necessary to search the index to Indictments for the immediately preceding period to obtain a reference to the Sessions Roll. Where a person is shown as having been reprieved for transpotation, the date given is that on which a Royal Pardon was issued and not that of the original sentence. To find the Bill of Indictment of a person reprieved it will be necessary to search the Sessions Minute Books or Rolls for up to two years before the date of Reprieve. The date of Transportation has been included with individual entries only where it has been possible to find a receipt from the Captain of the Transpotation Vessel. Where no date of Transportation is shown for a person sentenced after 1717 it may be assumed in most cases that Transportation was effected in the ship next to sail after the date of sentence. ( A full list if known sailings of Convict Ships 1671 - 1788 is available to be searched. ) Hope this explains how this CD works.
