Looking for information on a David Hess who resided in Conestoga Township and married a Martha (possibly last name of Line) possibly the sister of a Christian Line. David Hess appears to have died before 1850, possibly even as early as 1840 or before. David might be the son of Christian Hess & Catharine Goghenour who resided in the southeastern end of Conestoga Twp close to Martic Twp (in what is now Pequea Twp.). If this is the same David Hess then he would have been born ca. 1785-1793. Martha Hess and some of her children are buried in Byerland Mennonite Cemetery in Pequea Twp. These may be some of the gravestones that had been moved from the original Byerland Mennonite Meeting House graveyard. No gravestone for David Hess has been found. Martha's gravestone is marked as; Martha Hess b: Dec 21, 1789; d: Sep 21,1866; age: 76y9m; David & Martha are believed to have had the following children: Fronica (Fanny) Hess, b- Jul 22 1807 d- Jun 8 1899, married on 8 Dec 1853 to Frederick William Rehm (1803-1856). Samuel Hess; b-1810; d-1852 Catharine Hess; b- Jul 12, 1812; d- Mar 2,1899 Esther Hess; b- ca 1820; d- Feb 6,1860; age: 39y9m16d; Christian Hess; b- May 28, 1822; d- Jan16,1846;age: --y--m22d; Martha Hess d: May 15,1842 [?]; age: 27y5m25d; Elizabeth Hess; b- ca 1830 Jan 5, 1815; d- Feb 8,1883 In anyone can add to this or confirm this please let me know. Hi Frank, I was surprised to see your message. David Hess who lived along Sickman's Mill Road isn't buried in his own cemetery ? I would have thought he was or is it a question that you aren't sure he is ? You suggested he was dead by 1850 but the property shows up as being David Hess's property in the 1864 Atlas. There were two other David Hess's across the street and I assumed one of them was his son. I saw a reference to a David Hess in the Columbia Spy, dated 1870, isn't this your David Hess ? The Columbia Spy July 2, 1870 County Items The mule team has been rescued from the raging waters of the Conestoga at Harbor On Friday night last, a horse belonging to David Hess, Sr., who resides near Conestoga Centre, was taken out of the stable and shot dead by some scoundrel. Some time ago a mule belonging to John Buckwalter, Jr., in the same neighborhood was killed in the same manner. There was also a David Hess who lived on River Corner Road who may be the guy who had his horse killed. He was a little closer to John Buckwalter Jr. (he shows up on the 1864 Atlas) thanyour David Hess but it depends on how your define "neighborhood".
