    2. Here is my translation for what it is worth. The ship Eliza out of Glasgow with Robert Sinclair as Master. The ship can carry 20 tons of cargo and has a square stern. The ship Barbary out of Glagow with Hugh Scott as Master. The ship was built by the Dutch and can carry 120 tons of cargo. The ship Robert out of Ireland. It can carry 140 tons of cargo and has a square stern. Modern ships are listed by displacement, but in medieval times ships were listed by how much cargo they could carry. I don't know when the change over was made, so the weights may be displacement, which means the weights listed would include the ship's weight plus the weight of the cargo. 3. Thank you. That helps. The important thing to genealogy is that Hugh Scott was master of a ship from Glasgow docking in America 29 years before a man by the same name was living in Lancaster co. Could be an explanation why family tradition puts the Lancaster Hugh Scott in America before 1700. Still guess and by golly. -----Original Message----- From: dingoal@aol.com [mailto:dingoal@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2005 11:40 AM To: PALANCAS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PALANCAS] Custom House list Here is my translation for what it is worth.
