LE BRETON.-It is with deep felt sorrow we have to record the death of our respected fellow citizen, Ame LE BRETON, who died of cholera, in the city of Cincinnatti[sic], on the 16th ultimo, in the 70th year of his age. Mr. LE BRETON, was a native of France, from which he emigrated many years ago, and settled in this city. About five years since his daughter, a highly accomplished and intelligent young lady, was married to a gentleman named JENNINGS. Mr. Jennings died of cholera, in the state of Mississippi. Mrs. JENNINGS survived her husband but a short time, and fell a victim to the same awful scourge, leaving her infant among strangers. Mr. LE BRETON, deeply effected with the calamity which had befallen his family, set out for the purpose of becoming the protector of his orphan grand-child, and on his return, was seized with the same disease, which had proved so fatal to his son-in-law and daughter, and died at Cincinnatti[sic], leaving the bereaved orphan again among strangers: But "he who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb" raised up friends and protectors to the forlorn one: Bishop Purcell, the benevolent, the Christian Bishop Purcell, after soothing the last moments of the expiring grandfather, took the infant to his bosom. We understand the child is to be placed under the care of Mrs. RISDO[?] of this city, whose affection for the mother will be transferred with interest to her infant. Of the deceased Ame LE BRETON, we may say with Pope, "An honest man is the noblest work of God." The book "Marriages & Deaths from the Newspapers of Lancaster County Pennsylvania 1831-1840" by F. Edward Wright contains abstracts of the Lancaster Examiner & Herald, but Mr. Wright did not have access to all the editions of that newspaper that are currently digitized. For the 1834-1840 time period, I will only be transcribing those issues of the Lancaster Examiner & Herald which are NOT included in this book. Following is a list of the editions to be transcribed for the 1834-1840 time period: April 10 & 17, 1834; May 1, 1834 thru March 31, 1836; [No digital images are available for April 1836- April 1838]; May 24, 1838; June 21, 1838; July 5 & 12, 1838; Aug. 23, 1838; Sept. 20, 1838; Dec. 13, 1838; April 1839-March 1840; July 8, 1840; and Aug. 12 & 19, 1840.
Wed., March 4, 1840 Lancaster Examiner & Herald, Deaths, p. 2: BURROWES.-On the 1st inst. Mr. Isaac BURROWES, Sen. aged about 70 years. BOYD.-Died suddenly, on the 20th[?] of January, at two o'clock in the afternoon, on the Peach Bottom farm, the former residence of her father (Mr. Wm. PORTER,) Miss Mary BOYD, consort of Nicholas BOYD, Esq. aged 48[?] years, 7 months and 24 days, leaving a husband and five children to deplore her departure. [The tribute continues but is not transcribed here.] YOHE.-Died at her residence in this city, on Monday morning, the 17th instant[sic], Mrs. Catharine YOHE, aged 63 years. In her death society has sustained a loss; the poor have been deprived of their best friends, and her children of an affectionate parent. Mrs. YOHE was a remarkable woman. Her powers of comprehension and views of business and society, were bold and clear, and her energies and capacity for execution, surpassing those of her own sex, were scarce second to the most enterprising of the other sex. She was the daughter of a wealthy and highly respectable Lancaster county farmer. Having married early in life, she removed to this city, and her husband proving unfortunate in business, Mrs. YOHE commenced keeping an hotel. Her history while engaged in this occupation, is, in some sort, the history of the Western trade with our city. She was contemporary with it in her character of hostess, for a period of upwards of forty years. And it is to have done something, and perhaps not a little, for the benefit of that trade, to have kept at that early period, a good house for the accommodations of the Western merchants, annually visiting our city; and they ever found her house their home. She kept successively, the Red Lion, the "Western," the "Washington," (in Fourth street) and the North American Hotel; the latter of which, one of the largest and most complete establishments in our city, she erected herself, at a cost of near one hundred thousand dollars. [The tribute continues but is not transcribed here.] Wed., March 11, 1840 Lancaster Examiner & Herald, Deaths, p. 3: DOWNEY.-Suddenly, on the 25th ult. Mr. James DOWNEY, of this city, aged 62 years. Wed., March 18, 1840 Lancaster Examiner & Herald, Deaths, p. 3: McDOWELL.-At Mercersburg, Franklin co., Pa., very suddenly, on the 3d inst. Mrs. Nancy McDOWELL, wife of Dr. John McDOWELL, of that place and daughter of William McPHERSON, Esq. (deceased,) of Gettysburg, aged about 2[?] years. ATKINSON.-On the 1st inst., at Wellsville, Ohio, Mr. Richard ATKINSON, formerly of this place, aged about 25 years.
