    1. Anna, Mrs. Jacob Barr/Bear
    2. Susan Y. Clawson
    3. I am collecting information on four possible wives for Jacob BARR / BEAR 1723-1803. Any help appreciated. Please don't cite this posting as a source because I am sure there are errors here. These wives are mentioned in various publications, in various combinations and orders. I have found citation of some primary records to support these relationships, but not many. Looking at the dates, almost all of them conflict in some way with another date. The numbers preceded by a letter are from the Groff Book. HB stands for the Herr book. ANNA GROFF N5 HB#180?? [sorry, I don't have the number with me] m 18 Dec 1761 B. 20 Jul 1740 d. 30 Aug 1777 dates from HB, perhaps based on Bible records Mentioned in HB as mother of children Martin and John, both born before 1761, and Barbara, b. Sept. 1761; Another daughter, Elizabeth, seems to have been born in 1751. This means that four of the seven children usually ascribed to Anna Groff N5 appear to have been born before the December 1761 wedding. Two children, Christian and Abraham, seem to have been born after the 1761 wedding and before her death. [Anna? Elizabeth?] BRUBAKER m. ? No birth or death dates (but RW Davis suggests this is the first wife, d. 1761) Two possible children, whose estimated birth dates vary from 1768 to 1784. Mentioned in HB in listing for daughter Susanna, who married Jacob Graff/Groff #663 P7. Another possible daughter is Anna. Sources say Anna appears in marriage records of Trinity New Holland Lutheran church as m. 1794 John Shenk, but I have no copy of the record. ANNA SOUDER GB B113 m. aft 1777? b. c. 1741 d. 1795 (will) will dated 7 Dec 1795 probated 19 Dec 1795, says Jacob was lame and needed a caregiver; leaves some bequests, none to children. Susanna and Anna are usually listed as children of Anna, but they are not in her will. Estimated birth dates for both vary widely ANNA GROFF wid. KENDIG O4 and HB #93 m aft 1787 or 1795? b. 6 Dec 1735 per Herr Bible; b. 12-1735 wp1771 (or 1740-1811? Online listing) m. 1756 Henry Kendig per GB; Henry d. 1787 (online listings) 6 children by Henry; probably none with Jacob Jacob had a wife named Anna in 1803 when he wrote his will, and both Anna Groff and Anna Souder were dead by then. Either Anna/Elizabeth Brubaker or Anna Groff Kendig seem like candidates, but if Anna Groff died in 1771, she couldn't even have married Jacob Barr because he was married to Anna Groff N5 between 1761 and 1777. I need a copy of the 1771 will mentioned in the Groff Book as hers. Jacob's will divides his children into two groups: the children of his unnamed first wife: Martin, Jacob, Elizabeth, John, Barbara, Christian, and Abraham; and the children of his present wife Anna: Susanna and Anna. John was deceased by 1803 and is mentioned in such a way that it is not entirely clear which group he belongs with. He is sometimes listed with the second group. Also mentioned are his wife Veronica (who is sometimes mistakenly considered another daughter) and their two children, Jacob and Mary. Thank you for your patience through this long, confusing query. Susan

    3. Hi David, I don't think there is an easy way to confirm what Stacy Wood has written without checking the Moravian Burial Book. None the less, I'd be pretty confident Stacy didn't make a mistake. He was doing a clock book and didn't have to know where Gottlieb was buried so the fact that he mentions it suggests that he actually saw it. In addition Stacy lives in Lancaster and so would have had easy access to the Moravian Burial Book. Probablility is an import part of genealogy and we'd expect someone who was a Moravian in Lancaster to be buried at the Moravian burial ground in Lancaster. We wouldn't expect him to be buried at a Mennonite cemetery in Lititz, I'm not sure there is even a Mennonite cemetery in Lititiz. Mennonites were primarily a rural population, it wasn't until the 1870s that there was even a Mennonite Church in Lancaster. It strikes me as likely that the person who said he was buried at a Mennonite Church in Lititz confused Mennonites and Moravians, this is a pretty common mistake to people who are unfamiliar with these groups. I would assume that what Stacy wrote was correct but write to the Lancaster County Historical Society and have them check the Moravian Burial Book for you. I should mention that I know Stacy Wood, he and I are distant Stokes cousins, but his track record shows him to be a good researcher. Jim David Herr <dherr@ec.rr.com> wrote: I would like to thank Tim Robinson, Jim Stokes, Jan Frank and Dan Weinhold for their responses to my question regarding the burial place of Gottlieb EBERMAN. Some of the initial responses indicated that Gottlieb was buried in the Mennonite Cemetery in Lititz......this inspite of the fact that the EBERMAN family was Moravian. Later responses suggested that Gottlieb was buried in the Moravian Cemetery in Lancaster referencing the Moravian Church Burial Book........which was referenced on numerous occasions by Stacy Wood in his writings. I guess I am still a little confused. Was Gottlieb, a Moravian, buried in a Mennonite Cemetery in the Lititz area or was he buried in the Moravian Cemetery (Lancaster Moravian Graveyard) in Lancaster? The latter seems more logical, but I am not sure. And, if he was buried in the Lancaster Moravian Graveyard (corner of West Orange and Market Streets) were his remains moved to the Greenwood Cemetery when the Lancaster Moravian Graveyard was removed in 1916/1917? Based on what I have been able to find out to date transcriptions were not recorded before the destruction of the Moravian Graveyard, but apparently William F. Worner reconstructed who was buried there through "Plan of Burying Ground, 1836"; Moravian Archives, Bethleham; and the Lancaster Moravian Church's Burial Book........all of which I do not have available to me here in North Carolina. Any additional help in reaching a final determination would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance. 3. Hi Tim, Would you check your book for Thomas Stokes for me. He came to New Jersey on the ship Kent as a settler, in 1677, but previously, in 1665, he was exiled to Barbadoes for being a Quaker. He had been arrested at the Bull and Mouth Tavern for attending religious services. His ship was captured by the Dutch and returned to Holland, after the war between England and the Dutch, he was released by the Dutch and returned to England since persecutions of Quakers had ended. I've checked some of the Coldham books but haven't seen any reference to him. These events were reported in Bess, a chroniclor of Quaker suffering but I wouldn't mind confirming his information.
