Okay, kids, let's not argue. I disagree with your statement below ... tax lists can verify that a person resided, or owned property, in a particular place and in what time frame. It can help with the possible migration trail ... Everyone have a great day and good luck researching. I SAY THAT IS ONE CHOICE I GUESS THE REPLY LINK SHOULD NOT BE ON MY E-MAIL TOOL BAR,AND ENOUGH ON THE SUBJECT
jerry@jerry.hetrick. says: get a life, this pertains to genealogy in its purest form. Yes it does, and it's a fine offer....but we do not all need to see the requests on this list. I too have taken up this kind offer but I E mailed him privately to ask for it. Folks, when you get the tax-militia lists , please say Thank You privately, too. Jan Hall

Good Evenin' Richard and List: My whole hearted apologies for misunderstanding what Richard Pence wrote! As I said, "I came in - in the middle of things" and probably should have read all of my PALANCAS-L e-mails before replying. Once again please don't feel that I have singled you out, Richard - even though I did [by habit] hit the reply button rather than post my own reply to the whole list. I know from my own experiences that there are many, many "hidden" places to look for family information other than the ordinary places such as Census, Bible Records, Wills, Deeds, Marriage Records, etc. and was only trying to suggest to those listers who may be new to genealogy that this [the County Tax Lists] may be one of the places they may have to search in order to find information on their relatives. I'm also going to throw out another "hidden place" to search for those elusive characters, you may also have to look on Deeds of Releases - which are most often included with the regular land Deeds. These documents usually are for when a person had died and the land/property is to be sold. The remaining living heirs must sign-off to allow the ground to be sold. And if they live outside of the area that the property was in - such as another county or state - this may also be noted. Best Wishes to All on your quest for your ancestry! SO BE IT
Depending on the time period, your ancestor may not appear on very many records. Finding them in a tax list proves that you are looking in the right time period and right geographic area that they were in for at least awhile. Finding men on a tax list where they weren't before may give you some kind of indication that they have just attained the age of majority and eligibllity for paying taxes in the first place--or that they just moved into an area. Sorry to object to your objection, but there are a lot of clues to find your ancestor in a time and a place by looking at tax records. Karen

No one has suggested that tax lists are not important genealogical sources. They are. However, what I wrote, since you responded to my message, is that I doubted the claim of another person that tax lists are "genealogy in its purest form." Hardly. There is a considerable difference between what I wrote and what you are claiming I wrote. Richard Pence
Anyone who has access to Heritage Quest, can download the Revolutionary War Military Fines. In the Place search, type in each county name and look for the Fines lists titile "State of Accounts." Alice
I am File Manager for the Lancaster County Archives ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/lancaster/ ) . I would be very happy to add the information to the site. However, it would need to be transcribed to text format....I cannot upload the pdf files. At the present time I have a number of other transcription projects going on, so I would not be able to do this myself for a couple of months. If there is anyone who would like to volunteer to transcribe and proofread the information, please contact me directly. HEY FOLKS! Could we quit challenging each other and spend that effort on looking for our ancestors? Sure all those e-mail request fill up mailboxes but that is what delete keys are for. We all don't have the same priorities or go after the solutions in the same way. Let's just use the delete key if we don't like it. I have gotten a lot of good info off of this list AND I have used the delete key. Works well both ways Thanks Doug Satellite Beach FL
Good Evenin' Folks: I'm comin' in - in the middle of this but I beg to differ with those who think that Tax Lists are not genealogical sources of information. I too had thought this way for quite a few years - when others suggested that I "search the Tax Records". But was extremely enlightened to the genealogical information that can be found in such records when several years ago I was doing research for a friend who was trying to find the elusive names of parents of his ancestor. I and my "bestest" friend went to a dark, damp, musty county courthouse basement - where the original county Tax Lists were stored. There after reading through several books, ran across the Tax Records that also listed the Pauper Children of the county. In one of the township's lists was the ancestor of my friend along with his birthdate and two of his siblings - who were old enough to go to school. Also along with their names and birthdates was the name of their father. This was the only place we've been able to find written documentation as to at least the father's name. So I guess I want to say that Genealogical Information can be found just about anywhere! Best Wishes to All on their genealogical quests! WELL I GUESS IF ONE OF YOUR ANCESTORS LONG LOST WERE ON THE LIST IT MIGHT BE !!!
I doubt that tax lists are even close to being "genealogy in its purest form." In any case, I do have a life and would rather not spend it reading 40 requests for a tax list - especially when most of us know that 'Net manners are that such requests should be made by private email, not on list. To the list: What kind of genealogy information would you find if you requested Mortgage and Administration Bonds from the Lancaster County Archives? Thank you. Dianna
