There are places online that have outdated records--but only the lookup vols. will know the current listings. That is the reason I recommended a lookup be requested. You are correct that many applicants trying to use old applications from the days when less proof was needed for approval are not successful as many ancestors have been removed from the lineage books over the years unless or until someone can actually provide sufficient proof of service. Just because you might not have a Mennonite background don't discredit this place. It has a wonderful library. I found info on my husbands Quaker background and information on my Methodists. They people there are very friendly and helpful. Nancy (a transplant from CA to Lancaster Co PA)
Some of my family were Brethren, not Mennonite, but I found material at the Mennonite Historical Society. Don't automatically assume that you won't find things there if you don't believe the family was associated with the Mennonites. They have a LOT of material on families--and I met a cousin there (I don't know what degree of cousin it was, because that part doesn't matter to me--it was just exciting to meet someone who was researching the same lines.) Susie, You didn't indicate anything about your family's religious or cultural background, so this may not be appropriate, but I have found a lot of good information at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Center < http://www.lmhs.org/> in addition to the two places already mentioned. Also, some of the individual townships in the county have historical or genealogical societies that offer old newspapers, etc. I spent a profitable evening at the Manheim Historical Society <http://manheimpa.com/> looking at microfilm copies of the Manheim Sentinel, and I know there are other local groups with similar holdings. Which county did he live in when he moved to Ohio?
