I think you are talking about the Oath and Affirmation of Allegiance and Fidelity as directed by an Act of the General Assembly of the State of Pennsylvania passed the 13th day of June 1777. I can't lay my hands on the copy the bill that was passed but I think it applied to males of military age 21 to 53 The actual oath appears in Deed Book L, Page 389 and reads as follows " Lancaster County SS: I do swear or affirm that I renounce and refuse all Allegiance to George the third King of Great Britain his heirs and successors and that I will be faithful and bear true Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania........September 26, 1777 Followed by the names of those that signed or took the oath on that date. I hope this will help or at least give you a better understanding of what was involved at the time. I have two ancestors - father and son - who have the same name. One of them signed an Oath of Allegiance to PA in 1777 in Donegal Twp. I would like to be able to determine which man most likely signed the oath. The father was born in Germany and was naturalized in 1769. He was age 65 in 1777. His son of the same name was born in PA; he was age 25 in 1777 and unmarried. There is no record of him serving in the war. Both men were living in Donegal Twp in 1777. Any thoughts on which one signed the oath?
there are no documents, per se....in the early years when foreigners got off the boat in Phila they were immediately to swear allegiance first ot England and later to the United States. during the revolutionary period they were to swear to the United States and their names are mixed in with the land records (deeds) of the couinty.....that is all you will get is the names. John Phillip LIEBRICH and his son Nicholas are buried at Zion Lutheran Church in Manheim. The family immigrated from Germany in 1754, and Nicholas was a Revolutionary War Veteran. I have added translations of several German language articles to the Liebrich web site, which traces the family back to 1150. In Germany, they liived in the BUTZBACH, WETZLAR and WORMS areas. Related Lancaster county families are BUCHER, FRITCHEY, ORTENBURGER, GARDNER, FRANKS, WILSTACH (WILSBACH), NAUMAN (NEWMAN) and BRAUTIGAM. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~leebrick Please come visit!

Through the efforts of Henry Deemer, Lancaster Cemetery has graciously contributed their records of interments to the USGenWeb Lancaster County Archives. These files include information for over 15,000 individuals and can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/lancaster/cemet.htm . Please note that although this represents the vast majority of interments at Lancaster Cemetery, there may be some people not included due to missing records at the cemetery office. A very big thanks to Henry as well as Lancaster Cemetery for making these records available online. They will no doubt be of great help to many researchers. Hi there!! Many thanks for the responses I received, still lacking some essential info but every little helps. To James Stokes, I appreciate clarification of the way the aleggiance worked, suppose my ancester was not listed for 2 of the reasons, his sone did go to war, but also if my records are close he also would have been an "old man", perhaps 57 years old. To Madaline; I don't believe this is my family, they were apparently at Frederick but much earlier than that.. I am always amazed at how many people doing genealogy who are so unselfish and helpful, it is wonderful!! Betty Edwards.
Don't know how much help I can be to you. But I have a Tacey H. Foulke who married Daniel Burt. Tacey was born in Bucks Co., PA., was the dau. of Samuel Foulke and Ann Heacock. Samuel was the son of Judah Foulke. Samuel and Ann moved to Milford, IN. Ernest Weinhold Yes, we have a couple of hyphotheses that we would like to prove or disprove. We know that Tobias Hartman(n) lived in Strasburg Township in Lancaster County prior to his move to York County (York County deed gives his prior residence). We know almost nothing of his time in Lancaster County other than he was probably there between 1770 and 1779. We would like to see if he is related to any of the other Hartman families from this area in Lancaster County. Our Y-chromosome DNA is very unique and could easily prove or disprove relationship. Another hypothesis is we believe he may be the Tobias Hartmann who is listed as having left the Zellertal (Valley of Zell) of the Rheinland-Pfalz region of Germany in 1770. This area is near Donnersberg. We also have found that our DNA is a close match to a family named Hoehne who comes from Jettenbach, which is 10-25 km from the Zellertal. We believe that we may be on to something here. Thus we are looking for German participants from this area. Also, through DNA from desparate branches of our family tree, we have already ascertained that our genealogy tree to Tobias Hartmann is accurate. Thanks! We have started a Hartman/Hartmann/Hardman/Hardtman Y-Chromosome DNA project. We have three participants so far with lineages through California, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. We are looking for more participants especially those from the York and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania area and from Germany. To see what our project is doing please see: http://midatlantic.rootsweb.com/familyhart/DNA/hartman.html There is also a lot of interesting information on DNA Genealogy in general available at our site. I would be curious in the McLaughlin name. My children's grandmother was one. I know nothing and have been working on my family for them. Thomas McLaughlin m. Agnes Zelinsky my former mother-in-law was born in 1933. I know she had a son who served in Normandy so he was older. I don't know the ages of Tom and Agnes and never met him. Grandma McLaughlin died about 1986. My daughter was just little. We are from Akron Ohio Summit Co. I do not know but would place bets they came from PA. If anyone can locate that Zelinsky name it would be appreciated. Hi Betty, There are lists of non-Associators (those who chose not to serve) in the tax list for some townships for the year 1777. Not all of them are there, if not then you should check with the Lancaster County Historical Society to see if they have the non-associators list for the missing townships. In your case I don't' think your ancestor will be listed as a non-associator. The way the system worked was that if someone was a non-assocaitor he was fined and the money was used to pay for a substitute. Since your ancestor provided his own substitute, his son, he probably wasn't fined and probably won't be listed. Your ancestor could be listed as an "Old Man". The draft in Pennsylvania involved people between 18 and 53, anyone over 53 was regarded as an old man. These lists are usually pretty skimpy because, I think, many of these guys were not sure of exactly how old they were (they didn't drive at 16, drink at 21 or retire at 65 so the kind of markers we use to chronicle our life didn't exist in those days). Its also possible that some of these guys didn't want to acknowledge they were over the hill at age 53. There are lists of non-Associators for Manor, Conestoga and Martic townships on our web page. The 1790 census for those townships are on our web page as well. You might check the index to the 1790 census to determine what township your ancestor lived in. The will also be a guide to looking for church records. In the Revolutionary War folder on our web page is an article giving background information on the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania.
