    3. According to Churches and Cemeteries of Lancaster County, it is south of Brenneman Road, on a fence line between two farms. It is listed as the Musser/Stehman Graveyard, aka Jacob Musser Graveyard. If you do a search on Mapquest for Brenneman Road, Lancaster, PA, you can see where the road is at least. I do not see the cemetery in a present day ADC map of Lancaster County however. The book indicates that the cemetery was in poor condition in 1983, and that it was shown on maps of 1864 and 1875. 3. Hi Pam, Yes, there were a series of oaths taken, first on arrivial to the crown and later, when the revolution started to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to offset the oath taken to the king. He became a citizen because, according to British law, he wasn't allowed to own land without being a British citizen. Initially, the Penn government allowed people to buy land without becoming citizens but in 1728 they gave into pressure from the British government and all who had been sold land became citizens. The names of those citizens from Lancaster County are in Rupp's "30,000 names. There are lists from other counties in Rupp as well. Jim http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacahs/index.htm Pam Pearson <pampearson@patmedia.net> wrote: I don't want to create more confusion, but ... My immigrant ancestor arrived from Germany in 1749 and took an oath of allegiance to Great Britain when he arrived in Philadelphia. In 1769 he was also naturalized as a citizen of Great Britain. (Not sure why he neede to do both, but he did.) The 1777 Oath of Allegiance I'm referring to was to the State of Pennsylvania and was published in the PA Archives, Series 2, Vol. XIII. My limited understanding is that these oaths were expressions of allegiance to the cause of the American Revolution. Individuals making these oaths are also documented in "Revolutionary Patriots of Lancaster Couinty, PA, 1775-1783", by Henry C. Peden, Jr., publ. 2002 by Willow Bend Books. I am enjoying the discussion. 3. Jan, Thank you for your response. I never expected 16 with the surname of HERR. Herr in his book Genealogical Record of Rev. Hans Herr and his Lineal Descendants initially published in 1908. The above lineage, however, does incorporate the corrections contained in the third edition of Herr's book published in 1994. Again, I thank you and very much appreciate your time and effort. 3. Hi Daniel, Ben Franklin was alarmed about the large number of German immigrants but he had nothing to do with the requirement that people take an oath of allegiance. This was British law and they apparently didn't want a lot of illegal aliens running around their country. This was a fairly common procedure for most countries. British law also required someone who wanted to own land to become a citizen although the Penns managed to finesse that law a little bit. Jim Daniel E Weinhold <deweinhold@juno.com> wrote: ONE More? Mr. Ben Franklin became alarmed since so MANY Germany,s were arriving in the state of Penna. that he had said that he was afraid the state would become German. I do believe it was his idea to have Those males either sign on the 'dotted line THREE times or ( or an X) else entered as the German name "sounded" to the English clerk. Hence off time,s, one will find the immigrant,s name not only spelled incorrectly once, but by all Three Clerk,s as it happened to my Nicholas Weinhold, and thus entered into THE record as such, back in 1738, in the Port of Phila., PA. 3. Hi Doug, The oath at the time of immigration would have been administered as he got off the boat. They wouldn't let someone wander off and not take the oath. Check for early Delaware Records to see if they include the oaths. Originally, Delaware was part of Pa., in 1700 William Penn gave Delaware its own legislature but he retained the title of Governor. There is a chance it might be in the Printed Pa. Archives.
