Both the Mennonite Historical Society and the Lancaster Historical Society (both located in Lancaster) have a wealth of information. (Even if your people are not Mennonite, it's worth checking out as they have a lot of material available.) When I stopped at the public library in Lancaster, I was not as impressed by their collection of material. You will also want to check the early county historic records office, but I don't remember their address. I found a lot of things in early wills and early land records. Karen
You do not say how much time you have or what exactly you are looking for. If your ancestors lived and died in Lancaster County, then I would first go to the archives of the Lancaster County Courthouse and look up wills, intestate records, and deeds. The archives are on the ground floor of the courthouse in the old section and which is on the corner of E. King & Duke Streets in Lancaster. If your ancestors died somewhere else, then I would look for birth records and church records by going to either the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (located on Rt. 30 east of Lancaster, next to the Tanger Outlet Mall) of the Lancaster County Historical Society ( located on Marietta & N. President Avenues on the west side of Lancaster). Ask the staff for help at all locations. Hi, I'm on vacation and staying near Elizabethtown Lancaster Pennsylvania. While I'm here I would like to see if I can find any information on some ancestors who were born here in about 1840. I'm fairly new to family history and thought I'd ask if anyone knew which office I might find early records in. (actually, I'm not sure which kind of records existed at that time, so maybe I should also ask what records I need to look for). Any help would be greatly appreciated. OK, the good news is I found a few more ancestors.....bad news is, of course, that now I have more puzzle pieces to put together. If anyone can supply birth, marriage, death/burial info, I would be very grateful -- and, if we are connected, I am happy to share info. Here goes: Looking for info on John McKILLIPS and Margaret MOSS. Most of the census info says they were both born PA, although the 1880 census says Ireland for both. Margaret born 1795, John earlier (according to the 1840 census, he was older, but I don't know how much). Probably married abt. 1818. Children: Hannah, b. 1820 Sarah, b. 1822 Margaret Ann, b. 1824 Ellen b. 1824/25 (possibly Margaret Ann's twin, although I don't know for sure) Isaiah, b. 1828 James, b. 1830 All of them were born in Lancaster Co., probably Leacock or East Lampeter. However, Curtis Hannum's history of the Hannum family says that John & Margaret lived in Gordonville, Lancaster Co. (The Hannums tie in thru Margaret Ann's marriage [she's my line]): Margaret Ann married Lytle CARUTHERS in 1842. Isaiah married Mary (maiden name unknown). I have Margaret and Lytle's descendants and have census info on Isaiah and Mary. Hannah and Sarah McKILLIPS apparently never married, as they lived with Margaret Ann and Lytle later on. I have no info on Ellen or James. John McKillips disappears from the census after 1840, so he undoubtedly died bet. 1840-50. The family was probably Presbyterian. Margaret lived with Margaret Ann & Lytle for a while also. Either Margaret or John possibly had a sister named Ann who married a McPHERSON. Ann McPherson lived next door to Margaret Ann & Lytle for a time, then moved in with them. My John Humphreys CD with birth records has mysteriously vanished (it might not help, I know), so I can't check it. If anyone recognizes anything or can do any lookups, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Jim, I forgot to answer the 2nd half of your question regarding the David Hess in the Columbia Spy. Yes, I believe that is David Hess (1784-1873) here called Sr. but he was a Jr. to his father David Hess (1746-1815). The David Hess mentioned in the Columbia Spy was brother to my greatx3 grandfather John Hess (1785-1823). David Hess, Jr. (1784-1873) had a son Deacon David Hess (1806-1896) who with the River Corner Mennonite Church. He married a Mary Ann Huber. My guess is he is the David Hess who resided off of River Corner Road as his father got the homestead on Sickmans Mill Road when David Hess, Sr. died in 1815. Frank W. Some time ago a mule belonging to John Buckwalter, Jr., in the same neighborhood was killed in the same manner. Hello Jim, This is actually a different David Hess than the one that resided there right outside of Conestoga Center. This David Hess lived back closer to the area near the Byerland Mennonite Church. I am pretty sure he is the son of Christian Hess (1756-1818) & Catharine Goghenour. In Christian Hess's will (M-1-155) dated 10 Aug 1818 he mention's a son David along with son's Christian, Jr., John & Adam and daughter's Elizabeth, Esther & Catharine. It is this David Hess that I believe married a Martha or Mary Line. It now looks as though David may have died as early as 1830. This Hess family descends from Hans & Magdalena's Hess's son Samuel Hess where the David Hess who is buried off of Sickmans Mill Road is descended from their son Michael Hess. So the two David Hess' were cousins to each other. Frank W. I sent the 10:55 AM message inadvertently. I continue: The 1860 Lebanon Census shows David McKinney, 23, day laborer, Ann, 32, Mary,7, Emma, 4/12, in Lebanon Borough. The 1870 Census shows David McKinney, 35, works in furnace, Anna, 40, Emma, 10, William, 3, Annie E, 6/12, in Lebanon Borough. The 1880 Census shows David McKinny, 43, laborer, Annie, 48, Emma, 20, William, 13, Annie, 10, in Lebanon 2nd ward. So it appears that Emma was still single in 1880. You could check Lebanon churches (Catholic?) for Emma's marriage. This could well be your Emma. You're right; the Cramer name is a long shot.
