Land Patent: Transfer of public land to an individual, usually signed by the President, in the past. Land Warrant: An order by a government authorizing some action; a land warrant usually orders the survey of a piece of land prior to the issuance of a land grant. For the novice as to land records, who can define the warrantee and the patentee? Does anyone know of a Smith/Schmid family in Manheim T. who went to the First Reformed church in Lancaster in the late 1700's? Daughter Barbara was born c. 1785 from backing out her dob from her tombstone. There is no such surname in Manheim T. in the 1800 census. Richard B.

Hello. Can someone tell me how to find the Lemberger Cemetery in Lebanon County? I have a house guest from California that would like to go to the Lemberger Cemetery to visit the graves of her g-grandparents. Any help would be appreciated. Darlene
I would agree that I have never seen such a fine genealogical resource so well hidden. In fact, on the same link page, one can find scanned images of the patent indices--a valuable resource if you know the patentee but not the warrantee. Archivist Jonathan Stayer recently informed me that digital copies of both original warrants and original surveys should follow over a two-to-five year period.
First, thank you for posting this. It answers a lot of questions about the Cunningham Patton family, including the name of his wife (my 4th great grandmother). Second, fwiw, the name of the housekeeper in William McLaughlin's home in 1880 was Sarah Hagan, according to the transcribed version of the census at familysearch.org. Finally, the individual listed as "Garrison Patton" probably was "Harrison Patton," son of John Patton. Harrison was born c. 1843, according to the 1870 census. I really haven't researched the Spence family, so I'm afraid I can't help you in return as much as you've helped me. But if I do run across anything, I will let you know. I don't know if this means anything, but Jesse and Rebecca Spence are buried next to the family of John McCombs at the Mt. Nebo Methodist Church cemetery. But that could be just coincidence. Best, Richard Aurand Sherer
Richard, "A needle in the hay stack" Might you know, or heard of a Mr. Leon REED, who at one time (at least) was a researcher also and either lived in the Washington, DC. area or Maryland many year,s year,s ago? He did me a GREAT favor on a "lost" civil war vet. A long story. D. Ernest Weinhold Manheim, PA
Daniel Smith/Schmidt, son of Johannes and Catharine, was born on 22 Mar 1804 and baptized on 6 May 1804, according to the records of the Swamp Reformed Church in West Cocalico Twp. It appears that Daniel spent his entire life in Cocalico; the 1880 census shows Daniel, retired farmer, 75, and wife Anna, 65, in West Cocalico Twp. I think Daniel had two wives, Catharine Gerhard and Anna ?. Can anyone help me to fill some of the gaps in Daniel's vital statistics? Richard Emlin Reed Wesley Chapel, FL

Hi, all! Anyone out there have any info on SWARTZ or BLACK families in Lancaster Co. during the late 1700's? My ancestor, Barbara SWARTZ (01 Apr 1796-01 Sep 1872) m. Christian HALDEMAN. They resided in Rapho Twp., Lancaster Co. I have been trying to find information on her parentage. My best guess is that her father was John SWARTZ, (alias BLACK) Junior (d. 1799), and that her grandfather was John BLACK, Senior, m. Maria, of Mountjoy Twp.. Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Patty Haldeman Wise I have found the following tidbits: 1785 - Land record referring to Abraham BLACK and his wife Ann, John BLACK, Senior, and his wife, Maria, and John BLACK, Junior, and Mary BLACK, spinster - all of Mountjoy Twp. U.S. Census, 1790, PA, Lancaster Co., Mt. Joy John Swartz 1-1-3-0-0 U.S. Census, 1790, PA, Lancaster Co., Elizabethtown John Swartz, Jr. 2-1-4-0-0 John SWARTZ m. Belonged to John WEBSTER; now belongs to John BLACK, of Lancaster. Orphan's Court 1801-1803, p. 19, 7/28/1801: "John Swartz, alias Black dec'd. Abraham MEYER and Henry RUTT administrators of all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits which were of John Swartz alias Black the younger late of Mountjoy Township deceased having stated and filed in the Register Office of this county their administration Accoount on the estate of the said deceased and legal notice thereof being given by the said Register the same is now produced to the court for Confirmation. Whereby it appears that the said Account was duly passed by the said Register and that there is a balance in the hands of these Accountants of L691.16.6 œ consisting of outstanding bonds arising out of the real estate of the said deceased and payable at different periods. The court on due examination thereof and advisement had thereon approve of and confirm the same and direct that the saidbalance after deducting there from 11/3 the exzpences of this Court the remainder thereof amounting to L691.5.3 œ be distributed according to Law. An excellent reference for current townships would be Andriot's Township Atlas. In paper back, it is about $85 or 90 last I heard--may be more, but many libraries have it. I have advised people in classes I teach to get their ancestral counties so they can figure out the likelihood of people in various townships meeting...when they had to travel by foot, horseback or horse & buggy. To find out previous townships in a county, you can combine that reference with a book called the Map Guide to the US Census by Dollarhide (I think that's the title, or at least close to it.) It shows the boundaries of counties and territories as they were in various censuses. You may be surprised to find an ancestor in a census in a territory that you didn't expect because of the way the various territories changed boundaries several times before they became states. Karen

Does anyone know of an online source showing the names of the original Lancaster townships, and, if possible, their formation dates, and what happened to them (that is, to what county they went)? Thanks.
The Lancaster County Historical Society has a township map as well as a list of the townships and when they were formed, this for townships currently in Lancaster County.. (If you download the map and list make sure the list of townships are numbered, it looks like its easy to download the list but the numbers that help you identify the townships on the map don't download). http://lancasterhistory.org I've never see a list of the townships that went to other counties. I guess someone could construct such a list but looking at the townships in York County that were formed prior to 1749, the townships in Cumberland County that were formed prior to 1750, the townships of Berks County that were formed before 1752 and the townships of Lebanaon and Dauphin County formed before 1785 (the numbers are the years those counties were formed). I believe there were some townships formed that didn't continue after the new counties were formed, for example there was a Pequea Twp. in Chester County but when Lancaster County was formed, it disappeared. A second Pequea Twp. was formed later. Marie, There is an internet service named burgoyne.com which seems to be pretty much nationwide. Could this be what you're looking for? Subscribers to this service would have an email extension of @burgoyne.com. You can check it out at www.burgoyne.com. Hope this helps.
