My ancestor William McElhenny died in Fannett tp. circa 1797. Evidence from a deed included below indicates that he resided in York County, PA, in 1791. The area where he likely resided is now Adams County, PA. I have been attempting to link William to other McElhenny/McIlhenny families. There appears to have been a migration from Southern Lancaster County to the area of Mt. Joy, Reading, and Straban townships, Adams County (then York), circa 1752. I have been compiling data; however, I don't have enough evidence to draw conclusions. From Lancaster County Deed L3-270, we can know that a Robert McElhenny and his brother William McElhenny resided--or at least owned property--in Drumore tp., Lancaster County. Immediately after each sold his part of the property, both names appear in Adams County, obtaining warrants for land. An Ezekiel McElhenny follows the same path with other land, although I can't determine whether there was one Ezekiel or two. The Robert McElhenny, resident of Straban tp., died testate in York County, leaving a son named William. There is only one William McElhenny found in tax records circa 1779 to 1783 and on the 1790 Federal Census in York/Adams County. That man certainly is my ancestor--but is he Robert's son or Robert's brother? Or someone else? Seeking assistance with men of these names. Below, I have included quite a bit of data I've culled to further the process. There is a separate McElhenny family in the Lancaster area (John McElhenny and his brother Alexander) whose descendants migrated to North Carolina. There is another John McElhenny of Chester County whose son William appears to have moved to North Carolina. If I have time, I will later post that information to the Lancaster group. NOTE: The data below excludes a Samuel McElhenny who appears linked with the names below. Samuel resided on property adjoining Ezekiel McElhenny in Mt. Joy tp. Previous researchers have suggested that Ezekiel, Samuel, William, and Robert might all be brothers. I see no reason to discount this belief; however, I have only direct evidence that William and Robert were brothers. Early marriages performed by Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, from the 1740's to 1764 can be viewed on Heritage Quest by going to: Publications: Richards, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg,? Descendants of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg Unknown ::?The Society,,?1900,?239 pgs. The "a" numbered pages have the marriages of any surnames?(as opposed to what the book "sounds" like of Muhlenbergs only, ?which are on the regularly numbered pages) , along with witnesses names, and some other data in some cases.? I purchased the printed diaries of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg within the past year. But I don't think those included these marriages.? I guess I purchased the wrong books! This book is worth scrolling through, for various spellings of difficult German surnames. Does anyone else know if any of these marriages have been entered into any databases?? If not, it might be a good project for someone on this or another PA list. Not all the marriages are of Lancaster Co., but quite a few of them are. He also continued performing marriages after 1764, but they weren't in this book. Richard B. ?

I have a Gingrich/Kingery relative who is said to have possibly married a Huffman and lived in West Virginia.? They may have met in either Lancaster Co., or along the MD/VA border.? It is possible she was still at home in the 1790 census and married after that.? Richard B.
Hi, I hope I have this right: a bronze ground-level grave marker in Greenwood Cemetery, Lancaster PA, for one Rev. Samuel S. Shirey III, born 1902, and his wife Helen, b. 1904. Neither have death dates recorded. ItS the surname Shirey I hope I have correct, as somehow in the back of my mind I've wondered if I should be writing Shissler instead. Their grave marker lies immediately behind that of The Rev. C. Elvin Haupt, important pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Lancaster, d. 1920. I have no idea if there is any relationship, or if the proximity of the two cemetery plots is purely coincidental. Can anyone help me regarding this pastor born 1902 and his wife born 1904 and with no death dates recorded? Thanks. Cordially, Dr. Karl E. Moyer Lancaster PA

There has been recent interest in the Hoffman and Huffman Families of Lancaster Co., Pa. and Shenandoah Co., Va. Below is an article my coauthors and I wrote several years ago on the immigrant, Frederick Hoffman, Sr., who settled in Lancaster Co., Pa., as early as the 1740s after arriving at Philadelphia in 1737. Some of his descendants moved to Shenandoah (present-day Page) Co., Va., around 1789 and changed their surname to Huffman. Joseph W. Baker Huffman Family of Page County, Virginia This article appeared in Vol. 12, No. 4, of Mountain Memories, the newsletter of the Genealogical Society of Page County, Virginia, P. O. Box 734, Luray, VA 22835.. Recent research has proved the ancestry of the Huffman Family, that arrived around 1789 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and settled in the part of Shenandoah County, Virginia, which became part of Page County, Virginia, in 1831.1 These settlers were Widow Christena Hoffman (Huffman) and several of her children, Frederick, Christian, Ann, Barbara, Mary and perhaps Abraham. The family name, which was originally Hoffman, was gradually changed to Huffman over time. Although there were differences in the spelling of names in various references, an attempt has been made by the authors to settle on a uniform spelling as much as possible. The earliest documented ancestor was Frederick Hoffman, Sr. He received a patent on July 16, 1747, for a 114-acre tract of land in Hempfield Township, Lancaster County.2 The warrant was dated May 31, 1746. On May 2, 1761, he conveyed the tract to his son, Frederick Hoffman, Jr.3 Then, on April 18, 1770, Frederick, Jr., and his wife, Christena, sold this land to Christian Shwar.4 It is believed that Frederick Hoffman, Sr., was the Frederick Hoffman, who arrived at Philadelphia on October 8, 1737, on the ship Charming Nancy.5 Other passengers listed under Women and Children were Elizabeth Hoffman and Frederick Hoffman, a male under 16 years. In addition, records in the LDS Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, show that a Fredrich Hoffman and an Elizabeth Kluge were married at Schoemberg Schlesien Preussen, Germany, on October 3, 1728. However, no connection to the Pennsylvania Hoffmans has been made. Christena, the wife of Frederick, Jr., was the daughter of Abraham and Anna Herr, of Manor Township, Lancaster County. Probate records show Abraham Herr’s will was written on August 5, 1783, and proved September 15, 1785.6 Their children were Abraham, John and Christian Herr, Mary Long, Barbara Myers, Elizabeth Stoner, Magdalene Frick, Fronica Eshelman and Christena Hoffman. Richard Warren Davis has published additional information on the Herr Family.7 The will of Frederick Hoffman, Jr., of Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, was written on January 19, 1785, and proved on February 25, 1785.8 The executors named were Samuel Coffman/Kauffman, his son-in-law, and Christian Herr, his brother-in-law. Much of the will was devoted to provisions for his wife, Christe na, including money payments, certain personal property, and a 25-acre parcel of land from an 188-acre tract Frederick, Jr., purchased from Christopher Fry on August 13, 1770.9 The executors were instructed to build a house and stable on the parcel for Christena. The executors were also directed to sell the remaining real and personal property. They sold the rest of the 188-acre tract to Rudy Herr20on August 13, 1785.10 The will, other 2 probate records, and a deed, dated August 16, 1788, name the nine children of Frederick, Jr. At the time of his death, those of full age were Ann, wife of Samuel Coffman, Elizabeth, wife of George Ganser, and spinsters Magdalena and Barbara Hoffman. The other five children of Frederick, Jr., were Frederick (arbitrarily assigned III), Mary, Christian, Feronica and Abraham Hoffman, all of whom were minors.11, 12 In the August 16, 1788, deed, Christena Hoffman of Lancaster County, the widow of Frederick Hoffman, Jr., relinquished and released her term and estate in her late husband’s will.12 In the same document, her four daughters of age, Ann with her husband Samuel Coffman, Elizabeth with her husband George Ganser, Magdalena and Barbara, also of Lancaster County, conveyed their undivided interest in the 25-acre (resurveyed 27 acres and 37 perches) parcel allotted Christena in the will of Frederick, Jr., to Philip Grosh. Later, three other children of Frederick, Jr., then living in Shenandoah County, also conveyed their undivided interest in the20parcel to Philip Grosh: Frederick (III), November 19, 1790,13 Mary (spinster), September 29, 1795,14 and Christian, November 28, 1798.15 Personal Property Tax Lists Records indicate Christena Huffman had moved to Shenandoah County around 1789.16 This is further confirmed by the marriage of Barbara, her daughter, to Peter Hiestand, Jr., on August 19, 1790. In an affidavit attached to the marriage bond, witnessed by Frederick Hofman, Christena, a widow, stated Barbara was of age.17 Christena last appeared on the tax list in 1798, suggesting she probably died around this time. Samuel and Ann Coffman moved to Shenandoah County around midyear 1789. They sold their property in Lancaster County on March 14, 1789.18 Also before leaving Lancaster County, Samuel on September 22, 1788, purchased a 211-acre tract of land on Little Hawksbill Creek, Shenandoah County (present-day Page County) from Reuben Ruffner.19 When he transferred one-half ownership in the tract to his uncle Christian Herr, a miller of Minor Township, Lancaster County, on September 23, 1789, he was a resident of Shenandoah County.20 They and their wives conveyed the tract to Christian Huffman on November 1, 1798.21 Samuel owned other property in the Shenandoah Valley, including land on Smith Creek in Shenandoah County and on Linville Creek in Rockingham County.22, 23 Ann was Samuel’s second wife, he having previously married Elizabeth Reise. After Ann’s death and prior to 1809, he married Barbara Strickler (nee Brumback),20widow of John Strickler, who died in 1802. Available information suggest Ann’s children were Christian, Nancy and perhaps David.23 As mentioned earlier, Barbara Huffman married Peter Hiestand, Jr. She is buried in the Heiston Family Cemetery, Dry Run Neighborhood, Page County. Her tombstone inscription states she died July 25, 1839, age 73 years.24 Her children were Abraham , Barbara, Susan, John, Christina, Magdalene, Mary and Henry.25 3 Frederick Huffman (III)26, the oldest son of Frederick Hoffman, Jr., first appeared on the Shenandoah County Personal Property Tax Lists in 1790.16 He died in Page County on March 31, 1840, age 71 years, 1 month and 5 days. He is buried in the Huffman/Brubaker Cemetery (also known as Koontz Cemetery), located about five and one-half miles south of Luray, Virginia, off of Road 631, near Harper Valley Subdivision.27 His will was written on September 10, 1834, and proved on April 14, 1840.28 He married Barbara Neff, daughter of Jacob Neff, September 7,1791.29 After her death, presumably in 1810, he married Susannah Biedler, March 7, 1811.30 Susannah’s will was written on November 15, 1848, and proved September 22, 1857.31 The children from Frederick’s marriage to Barbara Neff were Christian (married Anna Roof, October 12, 1812, and died, childless, about two years later), Anna (married Daniel Berry) , John, Frances (married John Pence), Elizabeth (married Daniel Blosser), Jacob, David, Barbara (married Christian Kaggy), Maria (married Jacob Bur ner) and Frederick. From his marriage to Susannah Biedler, the children were, Joseph, Rebecca (married James Copp), Catharine (married Henry Cullers), Emanuel and Esther (married Reuben Long). Frederick (III) was a farmer and owned tracts of land on Little Hawksbill Creek and Piney Mountain in Page County, and in Rockingham County.23, 32 Christian Huffman appeared t o have accompanied his mother to Shenandoah County in 1789. Because of his young age, he did not appear on the Personal Property Tax Lists until 1799.16 Detailed information on Christian Huffman has been published by several authors.33-35 Briefly, he and Christena Gochenour, daughter of John Gochenour, were married on September 7, 1801, Shenandoah County. Both are buried in the Family Cemetery on the farm on Little Hawksbill Creek, south of Luray, that Christian purchased from Samuel Coffman and Christian Herr in 1798. His tombstone inscription states he died on April 30, 1816, in his 43rd year. Their children were Barbara, Martha, Henry, Anna, John, Mary, Abraham and Christina. It is believed that Mary Huffman came to Shenandoah County with her mother in 1789. The previously mentioned deed, dated September 29, 1795, definitely proves she was living there in 1795.14 Circumstantial evidence suggests she was the Mary Huffman, whose estate was probated in Shenandoah County in 1815.36 The estate of an Abraham Huffman was probated in Shenandoah County in 1807.37 Although not proved, there is a possibility he was the son of Frederick , Jr., and Christena. We have no further information on the other siblings, Magdalena and Feronica Hoffman, and Elizabeth Ganser. Endnotes 1Several years ago, one of us, HLH, discovered information in some personal papers of a deceased uncle, R. Milburn Huffman (b. March 24, 1880), Rileyville, Page County, VA), which indicated the Huffman Family in p resent-day Page County, VA, arrived from Lancaster County, PA. He has been blind for a number of years, and although very old he and a twin sister did all the work about the house. He did the outdoor work, while she attended to the house and did the marketing, and regularly every week Aunt Hannah, as she was known by young and old, comes to the village with butter and eggs, and has a pleasant word for all. The deceased was a member of the Baptist Church at Penningtonville, and left at his death $600[?] to buy a burying ground. The project has long been talked about, but lacked for want of funds, but the donation of Mr. DAVIS will enable them to purchase.
