Hello Lynn, I found the Clapp/Jackson St. Baptist transaction in a chain of title in a 1972 deed. Corner of Jackson St. and Hyde Park Ave. conveyed by H.C. Clapp and wife, S. G. Clapp and Joseph T. Fellows and wife TO: Frederick Geitz, by deed dated May 21, 1862 and recorded in the office for recording deeds in Luzerne County in Deed Book No. 88, 248. Your Catherine Clapp has a reference data on Pg. 181, Item #583 referring to Recorder of Deeds Vol 47, Page 352 which says: Catherine Clapp, Grantor to Catherine Clapp, Grantee. In Re: Petition as Female Sole Trader. Recorded March 28, 1887. Also, there is a Catherine Clapp reference data on Page 181, Item #583 referring to Recorder of Deeds Vol. 273, page 80. Catherine Clapp, et al. Grantor TO: Della P. Thomas, Grantee. A property on Lincoln Ave., Lot #19-20. Date of transfer is August 16, 1912, recorded on August 16, 1912. So, you found some new names. Hope this concrete info is exciting for you. Barbara In a message dated 4/14/2008 3:08:23 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, palackaw-request@rootsweb.com writes: Today's Topics: 1. The Jackson St. Baptist Church is now on this site. I don't know if my g-grandparents owned the property or rented. Since I live in Tennessee and can't get to the property records, is there anyone or group who can check on the property records to see who the church bought the property from. I know the store was there in 1896 and I think they were there in 1900. When my g-grandmother passed away in 1914, the church was there as they held a funeral service for her at the church. I need to know who owned the property from 1896 - to whenever the church purchased the property. Several years ago I wrote to the church but never received a reply. Depending on the results, I will know whether or not to check for a will for my g-grandfather and/or g-grandmother. I do remember my grandmother mentioning some family problems and the deposition of the estate could have been the basis. Any help received is appreciated. Thank you so much for doing this work for me. I don't know who HC Clapp might have been as I see no one in the family with those initials. I don't quite understand exactly your second paragraph. Does this mean that Catherine Clapp sold the store to herself? When they first came over in 1868 her husband worked the coal mines. I know that by 1880 Joseph left the mines and was working as a grocer. Catherine is someone to be very proud of. On the birth certificates of her children, (two were born in England and I have copies) she signed her name with an 'X'. Quite something to go from illilerite to being a successful shopkeeper. They built a house on Lincoln Street and I think this was the bone of contention when it was sold. Joseph died October, 1912 and Catherine died in 1914. Again, many thanks, Lynn Eivers -----Original Message----- From: palackaw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:palackaw-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of BWT3783@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 12:56 PM To: palackaw@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PALACKAW] PALACKAW Digest, Vol 3, Issue 48 -- Gotcha !!
