    1. Avondale Mine Disaster Commemoration Events – September 10
    2. Would like to invite everyone to attend one or both days of the events honoring the 136th anniversary of the 1869 Avondale Mine Disaster in Plymouth Township, Luzerne County, PA, in which 110 miners perished. On Saturday, September 10 from 11AM to 1PM please join us for a ceremony at the site of the disaster, off Route 11 in Plymouth Township, Luzerne County. Saturday’s event includes music, live breaker boys, recognition of miners and their families and the descendents of the deceased, tours and exhibits on the Avondale site, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, discussions of the significance of the site and more. Proceeds from Avondale memorabilia sold by the Plymouth Historical Society will be donated to community efforts to preserve the mine disaster site. From 1PM to 4PM there will be refreshments and a reception at the Plymouth Township Rec Park. On Sunday, September 11 from 1PM to 3PM, join us at Washburn Cemetery in Scranton, where 61 of the men who died in the Avondale disaster are buried. In addition to much of Saturday’s program, Sunday’s event will also include a reading of the original eulogy for the men, a cemetery tour and flower placements at the graves, and a presentation by the Amvets Honor Guard of Dupont. Refreshments will follow the ceremony. These events are sponsored by the Anthracite Living History Group with support from a long list of local historical, genealogical, governmental, and preservation groups. Both events are free to the public. Help us honor and preserve the memory of these men and the site where they died. For agenda, directions, and full list of supporters please visit _http://www.avondale1869.org/_ (http://www.avondale1869.org/) . This is a new website created to provide information on the Avondale and its history as well as information on site preservation efforts. Please join us! It is sure to be a wonderful event that will fill your spirit with pride, a sense of community and a chance to be proud of our coal region cultural heritage. Don’t miss it!
