    3. How nice to reminisce. I am also in my 70s and rode my bicycle from Scranton to Lake Ariel. A childhood friend and I rented a row boat and camped overnight on an island. We had a great time in the amusement park and swimming at the beach. In later years I became interested in the Gravity Rail Road and traced it's old road bed right through the site of the old park. I came across an old stereo-optic picture taken of the lake from the Gravity RR but the name was Jones Lake. My mother used to tell stories about riding the coaster and carousel as did I when the park was open. After the park closed the carousel was moved to Skyline Park in Owego, NY. and has since disappeared to parts unknown. You can read a bit more at: http://www.nepalostparks.com/parks/ariel.html A bit off subject but it caught my interest. 3. John, your name caught my attention. My uncle Jack (John Middleton) was born in 1922 in Carbondale, He died in 2000. He was the son of John Middleton (1889-1933) and Mary Escot (1891-1972). Others in Family Tree are Taylors,Whites and Mastersons. Any of these sound familiar?...Thanks Bob M -----Original Message----- From: John Middleton [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, August 28, 2005 12:07 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Lake Areal (spelling???) 3. Hi, The island is still there, but a bit smaller. Its name is Dumb Man's Island. There was a book written about the island and its name. I will get the web address of the book since it has been put on the web. Just a few facts about the lake. I believe it is about 400 acres. and at its deepest place it is over 80 feet. Starting at the beach and heading towards the island the lake forms some what of a Y. To the right it opens up into another body of water called Mud Pond. I believe that name has been changed, but I do not know the new name. I can remember swimming from the beach to the island. It was 1/4 miles. At the outlet area of the lake was a town known as Jonestown. This was the original town. It is my understanding that when the railroad came to Lake Ariel this is why Lake Ariel was formed at the head of the lake. Chicken or egg, I do not know which occurred first. The formation of the town Lake Ariel or the coming of the railroad.
