Have been a few days behind on reading the digests. My grandfather, Josiah Boyer of Taylor/ Archbald/Scranton often said he went to work in the mines at age 7, "picking slate in the breaker." He was born in 1891. He worked in the mines until they closed in the 1930's, then moved to NJ; died there at age 85.
