Dear Pa-Lackaw lister; The Genealogical Research Society, since our inception, has been computer-indexing as many records as the custodians of the records would allow. Northeastern Pennsylvania cemeteries have been notorious for being the "last with the least." Despite the wish of many clergy to keep many records private; we've been given many cemetery records which we computer-index. Many of our members have walked the cemeteries where the idea of copying or indexing the records has not been well received--a few have used a digital camera to save time and effort. We have a large file of pictures of tombstones---which someday will be merged with the computerized data. I mention this because many on this list expressed a willingness to assist in a program to enter Cathaderal cemetery records into a database. The cathedral cemetery is already doing this. Their records will be made available to any serious family historian. The Bishop is to be commended for taking this action. It is now a moot point for any of us to duplicate what the Diocese is doing for us. There are many cemeteries whose record keeping is still in the "dark ages." Our policy is to concentrate on those facilities that have no immediate plans to computerize. If, however, any lister wishes to assist in entering data (cemetery, obit or marriages); GRSNP has the records, the program, the desire, and the mission to computer-index the name of every person who ever lived, wed, worked or died within a seven county area of northeast Pa. If you have the will and a PC; you can do this data entry in the comfort of your own home at your own pace. All data in GRSNP's computers is given freely to anyone/everyone without charge. We have done this on a daily basis for the past six years by phone, fax, e-mail, or in person for those who visit our Research center in Olyphant. I enjoy reading the many helpful hints our more knowledgeable members offer to those neophyte family historians on this list. You are to be congratulated for your willingness to share your gift, your time and your talent to advance this most enjoyable pastime of seeking our stalwart northeastern Pennsylvania ancestors.
