Patti, Just because your motherboard was fried does not mean that the hard drive was also. The hard drive is where your files are stored. It's possible that if its still intact it can be taken out of your old computer and put in one that works and all of your files retrieved. This is not a difficult task for someone used to dealing with computers. It certainly would be worth checking on.
