Charles Winkle was born in Germany, although when and where have not yet been determined. His wife's name was Minnie, and they are known to have had at least two children: Charles Winkle b.1866 Germany d.1918 Elmira, NY Emma Christine Winkle b.1869 (see below) d.1945 There are two versions as to where Emma Christine was born. Her marriage certificate says she was born in Germany, but her death certificate says Scranton. Chances are that she was actually born in Germany, since she would have provided that information at her marriage. On the other hand, the fact that her death certificate suggests that the informant (a family member?) thought that Emma Christine's birth place was Scranton. And that gives a strong hint that the family may have lived in Scranton for a period of time after they came to the USA, perhaps during the 1870s. They do not appear in the 1867/68 Scranton City Directory, but that may be too early for them. Has anybody encountered Charles Winkle and family in Scranton during the last third of the 19th century? Is anybody aware of the Winkle (not Winkler) surname at Scranton, even if another family? Thanks in advance for input! I'm trying to help a friend trace her great grandfather.
