The historical New York Times Digitization Project has online historic newspapers in digital form. Now available is Chapter 2: The Civil War Years, 1860-1866. What is especially unique about the site is the use of software that allows you to enlarge the size of the scanned image without downloading a special program. For headlines it's not necessary, but for the fuzzy print in columns, enlarging was very helpful. If you have broadband access I recommend the 14 minute color movie about the part written material, especially newspapers, as well as the teletype, played in the Civil war. The movie is 137 MB (yes - that's 137 megabytes - about what 2 CDs will hold). And it's all free.
