    3. Every city has sections which bear different place names. Some fine examples are Georgetown in Washington, DC, or Harlem , or Hell's Gate, in New York, or Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. So it is that such names were kept as Scranton grew into a city. Providence was incorporated as a borough prior to becoming part of the city of Scranton. It refers to a specific section, wards 1, 2, and 3, on the north side and west of the Lackawanna river. Other place names still commonly used in Scranton are Hyde Park (also a borough at one time) and Bellvue, on the west side going south from Providence; Keyser Valley further to the west; Green Ridge, Petersburg, South Side, and Minooka, east of the river from north to south. There are several other names no longer in use as well - Patagonia, Lincoln Heights, Bellvue Heights, Capouse, Pine Brook, Sandy Banks, and Slocum Flats to name a few. -----Original Message----- From: Flower Child <mlkintner@enter.net> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, September 25, 2001 10:52 AM Subject: [PA-LAC] Scranton/Providence >Hi everyone, >I was looking over some email today and I had an email from someone who referred to Scranton as Providence.
