Does anyone know how old a woman had to be to get married in Lackawanna County without her parents' permission in 1892? My grandfather emigrated from a tiny village in Hungary to Scranton in 1891. I assumed he got settled and sent back to the village for the woman who became his first wife. She arrived May 2, 1892 when she was 16 but it appears they didn't marry until June 6, 1893 I have her church birth record, her ship record, and their marriage license). The only reason for the delay in their getting married that I can think of is her age.
