I not only have done it, but highly recommend it. Keep it simple and to the point---a Stamped envelope is good, a phone call has often put me in touch with some very helpful distant relations, that I find out aren't that distant when stories start to fly. About the worse that could happen is somebody that isn't interested might think your a nut----but maybe we all are. I now regularly correspond on the Net with at least two Third Cousins at least weekly. Even an uninterested party can put you in touch with a relative that shares our addiction.
