Hi, Does anyone know if it was the custom in 1902 to make application for marriage and then get married on the same day? My Grandparents application says that they made application to the Clerk of the Orphans' Court and County of Lackawanna, Scranton on May 7, 1902. The bottom portion of the "Application for Marriage" says this. And now, May 12th, 1902, duplicate certificate in form following, to wit, "I Rev. RG McManns hereby certify that on the 7th day of May one thousand nine hundred two at Scranton, PA, [couple] were by me united in marriage in accordance with license issued by the clerk of the Orphans' Court...", returned and filed. Attest: Signed: Rev. P.J. McManns Clerk of O.C.
PA had no waiting period until early in the year of 1936. While I don't know the exact month it was changed, I can probably browse through my collection of information and figure it out. The waiting period was waived for servicemen during the 2nd World War. Sometimes a civil ceremony was done at the courthouse by an Alderman - talk about an instant wedding! The clergyman in your application was Rev. Patrick J. McManus who was pastor St. Paul's RC at 1507 Penn Ave (near Green Ridge St., and sometimes given as 1509 or 1503 Penn Ave.), Scranton, from 1888 to 1908. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rita Akers" <RitCee@msn.com> To: <PALACKAW@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 08, 2007 6:36 PM Subject: [PALACKAW] Marriage Application/Wedding Date : Hi, : : Does anyone know if it was the custom in 1902 to make application for : marriage and then get married on the same day? : : My Grandparents application says that they made application to the Clerk of : the Orphans' Court and County of Lackawanna, Scranton on May 7, 1902.
