    1. [PALACKAW] Smith Family Diamond Ave. Scranton: George, Lena, Carrol, Alfred, Edna, Paul
    2. Lynda L. Jones
    3. This family is one of my biggest brick walls. Marie (Mary) Lena Uttrodt Smith was my great grandmother's sister. She married a George Smith of Scranton on 5/18/1907. The groomsman at their wedding was Oscar Thomas of Scranton and the maid of honor was Marie M. Krish, also of Scranton. They had their first child on 4/22/1908. I believe that child was Carrol and may have been a mixed sex (hermaphrodite) child (first raised as a girl then later became a man). I have a newspaper record of the birth of their first child as a female (not named), but then the census shows their oldest child Carrol is a boy born in 1908. There's a hermaphrodite somewhere in that family. I cannot find any Carrol Smith's in the 1930 census. The rest of the children are at home on Diamond Ave. >From the 1920 and 1930 Census I know they lived at 1307 Diamond Ave. (near the intersection of Philo St. and Diamond Ave.) in Scranton. George worked in the coal mines. They owned their home. They had the following children: Carrol Alfred Edna Paul A family genealogical chart says they had many children, one mixed sex, but these are the only names I have from the census. The January, 1918 will of her father, Charles Uttrodt, states that they lived in Providence at that time. I cannot find any records of them living in Providence, other than in the will. Marie Lena was called Mamie when she was younger. She is listed as Lena in the Census. She was the original Runaway Bride, before she married George. There are newspaper articles about that. Is there anyone who knows the family or knows that area of Diamond Avenue? I know Hillary Rodham Clinton's father's, Hugh Rodham, lived at 1042 Diamond Ave., near Foster St., and it was a closely knit working class neighborhood. Mamie was raised Lutheran. I do not know if she continued as a Lutheran after her marriage. I need to connect with someone in this family to fill in some details and hopefully find some photos from Mamie and George's era. Best wishes, Lynda Jones _____ .
