Ms. White has scanned a number of early Scranton items. Check them out at her home page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~scwhite/index.html Scroll down the page about half-way to her Pennsylvania listings and click on the listing. The 1890-1892 Scranton Directory and an 1891 History of Scranton are listed on Ancestry.com but I don't have access to them. jho ----- Original Message ----- From: Kathleen Benedick To: janice olds ; palackaw@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 7:36 PM Subject: Re: [PALACKAW] history of Scranton 1867 & 1868 Hi, Janice! Hi Debby- Calvin C. was Phoebe's older brother, which makes us cousins! Thanks for the info on Calvin, I previously had no info on his line. Huldah Brown's grandfather was James Brown who served in the Revolutionary War. I am going to attempt to join the DAR thru him, will let you know how it goes. Penn State University has a "Digital Bookshelf" online with some of historical books. http://apps.libraries.psu.edu/digitalbookshelf/index.cfm
Hi List, I am usually just a watcher on this list trying to pick up something on my Thomas Connolley and Margaret Joyce both b. Ireland who were married at St. Rose of Lima, Carbondale in 1845. Their son James is my great grandfather who was married here in Dutchess County, New York in 1874. Associated with my Connolley reasarch I always pick up all the Connolley/Connolly/Conley tid bits I can here in New York - that being said I came across this Dutchess County probate file from which I have abstracted the following. With the recent discussion on this list about a Michael Walsh and this Conley Probate Files Information (see below) family connections to PA - I decided to post this in case it helps anyone. (*****I do not believe that the ADOPTED son James nor his adoptive father Thomas are related to my great grandfather James Connolley/Connelly/Conley etc. but thought it interesting that adopted son Edward below was living in PA and adopted son James in Wappingers Falls in 1931*****Regardless I would like to hear from anyone who makes any connection to this family - just in case<smile> My James did live in Matteawan where these folks lived in 1910 Census so I have always wondered if there was a connection to my James. My James Connelly was b. in 1851 in PA and died 24 September 1883 here in Dutchess County, NY probably at Matteawan. ) Dutchess County Probate file Mary Walsh Conley (w/o Thomas Conley) d.12/29/1931 lists the following as heirs at law and next of kin: Peter Walsh, brother, Pittston, PA Michael Walsh, brother, Newburgh, NY James Walsh, brother, Newburgh, NY and as to legatees and devisees in the will: Edward Conley, son by adoption, Philadelphia, PA James Conley, son by adoption, Wappingers Falls, NY Loretta O'Reilley, Niece, Beacon, NY Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, 381 Lafayette St., NYC, NY Catherine O'Reilley (Petitioner) Sister, Beacon, NY One of the things Mary leaves her adopted son Edward is two pictures "one of my husband, Thomas Conley, the other my diploma from the Foresters"! In the will it is also mentioned that she leaves her sister Catherine O'Reilley, of 21 Oak Street Beacon, New York, "the insurance or moneys that may be due me from the L.C.B. A. of Beacon, NY; the Shepherds of Bethlehem of Beacon, New York; the Lady Foresters of Beacon, New York; the Golden Scepter of Beacon, New York; and also all my sheets, linens, bedding and all silverware, to her and her heirs forever. The chapters are all in the list archives, http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/PALACKAW/. The first five chapters are in November 2006. Look for History of Scranton in the subject. Here's the link to chapter 6, http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/PALACKAW/2007-01/1168485559 but I'm not sure you can access it directly from the link or must go through the archives. It appeared in January 2007. Hello list, I have been collecting the chapters for the History of Scranton. I have put them into a word document to have an ebook of sorts. The reason for this is because of my very limited eyesight and an ebook allows me to read/hear and search a document with my text-to-speech software, "ZoomText." I have chapters 1, 2, 3 and 6. I would like to blame the lack of my eyesight that I somehow missed chapters 4 and 5. But I really can't. I just somehow missed them on the list. If anyone has chapters 4 and 5 could you email me them at easamson@comcast.net Greatly appreciated, Thanks so much, Erik Erik A Samson Scranton PA 18505 easamson@comcast.net
