    1. Re: [PALACKAW] Company Stores
    2. Look at some of the information on Eckley.  The company store is still there - part of the exhibit in the village.  I don't remember which of the mining companies owned the store, but there may be something on the Eckley site.  When I was there several years ago, it didn't seem to have a name on it (not like Smith's Store or anything like that); I suspect the companies just ran them there.  They had a ledger that showed what each miner had taken; somehow it got deducted from the pay they received. s -----Original Message----- From: Jim Dolan <jimdolan@stny.rr.com> To: Lackawanna Mail List <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thu, 7 Jun 2007 6:02 am Subject: [PALACKAW] Company Stores have seen references to 'Company Stores' in various publications about oal mining in Lackawanna County. 3. I believe that you are missing the point made in the publications as you think these stores were the same as today's retail outlets. They did perform a similiar function, but they were not independandtly owned or operated. Considered it as a closed shop concept. The mines companies owned the land and the coal. They provided the housing for which they charged rent (usually in patch towns) and usually paid in company script - not real money, but still legal tender. They also provided food and clothing to their employees in the company store where the "script" could be spent, often at inflated prices. Eventually these stores were forced to accept currency as the mines were forced to pay real money instead of script, and as the communities grew, company stores went out of business. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Dolan" <jimdolan@stny.rr.com> To: "Lackawanna Mail List" <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2007 6:02 AM Subject: [PALACKAW] Company Stores : : I have seen references to 'Company Stores' in various publications about : coal mining in Lackawanna County. 3. Hi Folks, I have for sometime now working on finding unknown soldiers of the Civil War. I have found many, and now I am workinbg on a project of entering alot of these soldiers in findagrave.com. Many of them are PA men who found in the Civil War, WW I, and WW II. Please go into the site and leave a flower. And if any of you have any information on these soldiers, such as family members, or if you know any, please feel free to add pitures. Thank You. 2. I was born in Parsons in 1927. I still remember the Memorial Day parades that we went to as youngsters in W-B. We then had a chance to see some Civil War Vets, Vets from the Spanish American War and of course WWI. World War I was important because of my uncle (Lawrence Fehlinger) who died in France with the 109th. The big moment was when the boat loaded with flowers was floated down the river and as it passed the bridge was exploded. You other "old timers" may still call this Decoration Day" Hopefully you are all displaying your flags. 2. Use the reverse directory (a phone number lookup) at _www.verizon.net_ (http://www.verizon.net) You will probably have to find the site map and drill down from there to the "REVERSE NUMBER LOOKUP". But your should be able to do that. I think info.com and 411.net also have that. 3. In the center of the "Traffic Circle" there was a monument of Anthracite Coal that disappeared during the construction of the present day interchange. A couple years ago, while passing through the area, I went in search for this monument. I took a couple of pictures and posted them at: http://www.geocities.com/coal_monument/ According to the plaque it was re-dedicated in 1989. I presume that the new highway configuration was completed prior to this dedication. 1. [PALACKAW] Books on Lackawanna History
    2. Toni Mason
    3. Hi, I am going to attempt to write a family history but don't want to just write the "bare bones" with just names and dates. I would like to find some books that recount the struggle of people (especially Irish) in the early Luzerne-Lackawanna time period (l840-1910) for Archbald, Carbondale, Olyphant or Scranton. In other words, their dwellings, labor, food, customs, church activities, etc. that would give me a good idea of how they lived on a day to day basis. One story I'll never forget is that my great aunt never ate chicken. It was because she was the one who had to go out in the back yard, catch the bird and get it ready for the cooking pot. It's stories like these that I am after. If you know of a good book please let me know. Many thanks in advance. Toni Mason upstate NY where spring has finally arrived
