    3. Shirley and others: My grandfather Michael McAndrew(whom I never met) was a breaker boss in Throop, arriving about 1903. According to family lore, his job was to supervise the breaker boys. He later was promoted to breaker boss. Which mine, I don't know. The Mollies were active throughout the region. Among those convicted and hanged was another McAndrew. How he was related to my grandfather - and me - I don't know. It was a fascinating era. 3. I have been chasing the name 'Butcher'; one of my ancestors, Bridget Gallagher (I think) married a David Butcher, in the late 1800's , and died in childbirth, and the oral tradition is the baby's name was David. Most of her siblings settled in Allentown area, and Luzerne Co. Some even went to Wisconsin. All were from Co. Donegal. What do you think? 3. http://www.phoenixmasonry.org/masonicmuseum/fraternalism/st_george.htm The Order of Sons of St. George were first established in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1871. It was originally founded for the purpose of resisting attacks by the Molly Maguires, a secret society of Irish immigrant laborers working in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. The Molly Maguires were founded after the predominately Irish Catholic union called the Workingmen's Benevolent Association was broken up the mine owners and officials. The Molly Maguires operated in secret, and used the signs, passwords and grips of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (see CATHOLIC ORDERS for more information on the A.O.H.) to conceal their criminal activities, which consisted of raiding mine officials homes, beating them up and threatening them with death, and destroying mine owners property during the labor disputes in the 1860s-1870s. The Order of the Sons of St. George evolved into an ethnic fraternal benefit society for Englishmen residing in the United States of America, and their sons and grandsons. It offered sick and death benefits to members, benefits, and social activities such as dances, picnics and other lodge activities. Membership was limited to first-, second- and third-generation Englishmen. There was a female auxiliary called the Daughters of St. George. 3. Sometimes you see items on ebay from the Sons of St George. The following was found here: http://www.phoenixmasonry.org/masonicmuseum/fraternalism/st_george.htm The Order of Sons of St. George were first established in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1871. It was originally founded for the purpose of resisting attacks by the Molly Maguires, a secret society of Irish immigrant laborers working in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. It offered sick and death benefits to members, benefits, and social activities such as dances, picnics and other lodge activities. Membership was limited to first-, second- and third-generation Englishmen. There was a female auxiliary called the Daughters of St. George. Both organizations are long defunct. I really didn't think the supposed Molly Maguires "operated" in the Scranton area. Even so, could they have been that great of a threat in Scranton with all the Masonic organizations there in this particular era? -----Original Message----- From: palackaw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:palackaw-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of janice olds Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2007 12:23 AM To: palackaw@rootsweb.com Subject: [PALACKAW] Sons of St. George I noted in an obituary for a relative that died in 1901 that he was a member of the Sons of St. George. 1. [PALACKAW] Request: Newspaper advertisements from 1899 to 1902
    2. To my fellow researchers, I have a favor to ask from those of you who do a lot of newspaper research. I am writing a book about my great grandparents James and Margaret Morrell Thorpe. It's really a work of fiction, but based entirely on the facts I know about their lives. While I am inventing the dialogue of their love story, I'd like to keep the novel as historically acurate as I can. What I am looking for are newspaper advertisements for hats, women's clothing, household items, etc. Anything that might have been used by a family during the 1899 to 1902 time frame. If prices are mentioned--all the more valuable. If local establishments are mentioned, that's useful too. If you have copies of these that you want to share with me, they can be sent to my home address or if you'd rather, scanned and sent to the above email address. 3. Sharon, I'm in the Scranton area but I can't promise I can get to the library anytime soon with other things happening in life right now. I do have this from someone's research on Rootsweb on her obit: -----The Tribune, Scranton, PA, Thursday, Jan, 20, 1994, Page B-11---- Do a search and you may come up with more. I do have Higgins relatives but do not think I'm related to this branch. I know I was looking into a Lawless connection too. Can't remember offhand and complete file not handy. I think I have her as collateral info. Email me at cscottbsn@msn.com if you like so as to not fill it up here.
