I looked up the day of the week for May 7, 1902. I see that it is a Wednesday. That may not make any difference at all. Does anyone else out there have knowledge of family being married by Rev. P.J. PA had no waiting period until early in the year of 1936. While I don't know the exact month it was changed, I can probably browse through my collection of information and figure it out. The waiting period was waived for servicemen during the 2nd World War. Sometimes a civil ceremony was done at the courthouse by an Alderman - talk about an instant wedding! The clergyman in your application was Rev. Patrick J. McManus who was pastor St. Paul's RC at 1507 Penn Ave (near Green Ridge St., and sometimes given as 1509 or 1503 Penn Ave.), Scranton, from 1888 to 1908. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rita Akers" <RitCee@msn.com> To: <PALACKAW@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 08, 2007 6:36 PM Subject: [PALACKAW] Marriage Application/Wedding Date : Hi, : : Does anyone know if it was the custom in 1902 to make application for : marriage and then get married on the same day? : : My Grandparents application says that they made application to the Clerk of : the Orphans' Court and County of Lackawanna, Scranton on May 7, 1902. For what it's worth -- my grandparents were married on a Tuesday at 7 am mass in 1908. I've another set of relatives married on a Thursday. I've been told that weekday weddings weren't all that unusual. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Rita, Evidently there was no waiting period. Unless you can find a law in effect at that time to the contrary, I'd take it at face value, i.e., they were married on the day the license was issued. I just went through my file, and I have one from the 16th of March 1903 that indicates the couple was married the same day the license was issued. Hi, Does anyone know if it was the custom in 1902 to make application for marriage and then get married on the same day? My Grandparents application says that they made application to the Clerk of the Orphans' Court and County of Lackawanna, Scranton on May 7, 1902. The bottom portion of the "Application for Marriage" says this. And now, May 12th, 1902, duplicate certificate in form following, to wit, "I Rev. I live in Scott Township and there's a Gritman Road - do you think that might be where the cemetery is located? It's west of Route 81 (exit 202) off of Route 107 (Benton Road). You go past Decker Road on the right, Whites Road on the left, and Gritman Road is the next left. It's a very short road and runs into Whites Road on the bottom end. I don't think I've ever been on that road, but it's very hilly in this area so it could be Bushkos Hill. Hello, A couple of years back I wrote and asked if anyone had heard of the Gritman Cemetery in Lackawanna County. Someone was kind enough to send me a listing for the Gritman Cemetery located on Bushkos Hill in Scott Township. I really appreciated it because the listing had all of the people that I wanted. But because I like to have photographs of the tombstones, last week my husband and I, using a USGS map, drove all over that area looking for the cemetery. No luck! I know from experience that many of these old cemeteries are overgrown and difficult to find now but if anyone has ever heard of this one and has any ideas where it might be located, I would like to hear about it We will be going back to the Scranton area in a few weeks and will search again. Thank you in advance, Patricia Martin Kennedy Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Depends on the year. In PA anything from 1906 on has to be from the state, earlier would be from the county. I've "rescued" and old photograph of Hannah & Manly LATHAN which was taken at the Cramer Studio in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. The photograph is dated Nov 19th 1887 with the children noted as 6 and 7 years old at the time the photograph was taken. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

There is a theory that those without ID are family whose names you'd never forget; those with names are friends or perhaps distant relatives. Good luck. Gail Researching Harrison and Ward in Lackawanna County, PA tangara <slabar@enter.net> wrote: Last Saturday I purchased an old photo album at a distant relative's yard sale in Bangor, PA. It was owned by a Lobb family member whose wife was a Speer. I thought it would contain mostly pictures of people in the Bangor area, but there were plenty of photographer's marks from the Scranton area. Most of the pictures were unidentified, but a couple had names on the back. If anyone has any information on any of these people, I'd be interested in finding connections, and I can scan and email photos of the identified to anyone who has an interest.
