    3. Usually the city directory will tell you in the alphabetical listings, either as the occupation when you look up that person, or if you look up the name of the business. If they lived in an apartment over the store, you might also find them in the "block" (by street address) listings. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rita Akers" <RitCee@msn.com> To: <palackaw@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2008 3:40 PM Subject: [PALACKAW] Info Request: Grocery Store on Market St. : My Great Uncle owned and operated one of 2 grocery stores on Market Street : in Scranton during the period from abt 1900-1930. 2. Hi, I am responding to the post re: St. Joseph Foundling Home in Dunmore, Pa. My late sister was born there to my late mother in 1941 after my sister's late father abandoned our mother after getting her pregnant. Needless to say, this caused quite a bit of trauma for our mother. Since everyone who could possibly give a rip about any of this is long since dead, I question the logic behind continuing to keep the records sealed around this birth. Isn't it a Christian organization, and didn't it say somewhere, "The Truth Shall Set You Free?" Huh. Bobbie Ingersoll **************Start the year off right. 3. Good stuff, Susan in San Jose! Sandy, my Barretts were in Dunmore, beginning at the latest in 1897, when my great grandfather Michael Barrett died. His funeral Mass was at St. Paul's in Green Ridge, but he was buried at St. Thomas Aquinas in Archbald. That always seemed to me to be a long hike from the Mass to the cemetery, especially in 1897, so I've always assumed he had family in Archbald, but haven't been able to prove it to my satisfaction. Based on other records, my Barretts were related to some Munleys and McAndrewses, and there were quite a few of them in Archbald around the turn of the 20th century. Your Alice is about the same age as my grandmother Nora Barrett. So maybe they were cousins, who knows? Jack in Cincinnati

    2. When you say you "can't find" Alice, do you mean you can't tell which of the several Alices might be her?? My hunch is it's the family in Dunmore, because that is the closest to where they were, but there are several in Scranton or other nearby counties.? Also, she could have been indexed as Barnett, so you should check them, too. In Ancestry, they tend to?show the age 1 year older than they really were. These are possibly your Alice.? If you haven't already, research each family until you locate info that ties them to you.? Do you notice a set of family names?? Is there a grandma in the home in later years?? Check the surnames nearby to see if you see the?name she married.? Etc.? Get the land records and wills of these guys.? Maybe that first deed will ID where your guy last lived.?
