Paul, That set of microfilm of the Carbondale Leader is the same at all libraries holding it. Among the missing editions, 1901 thru July 10 1902 were not available. For the missing dates, I use the Upper Valley Edition of the Scranton Republican. Among the libraries that have the Republican, it's available at the the Andruss Library at Bloomsbury University. Dan, I will give you information on the David A. Jones I am researching. To be honest, I am not sure if the David A. Jones I have asked a lookup for is the same one. That is one of the reasons I want to look up the obituary for him--because I keep running across information for him in various sources and do not know if he is the same David A. Jones as mine. I am hoping the obituary will clarify. The David A. Jones I am researching was born 2 September 1821 in Wales. I know nothing about his parents. I know that his wife's name was Margaret and that is all. As for his children, they were as follows: Mary Jones (b. 1844 Wales d. unknown) John Jones (b. 1847 Wales d. unknown) Rachel Jones (b. 1849 Wales d. unknown) Elizabeth Jones (b. 1852 Wales d. unknown) Ann Jones (b. 17 September 1854, Minersville, Schuylkill, PA m. John David Lloyd d. 22 Aug 1912, Canon City, Fremont, Colorado) Sarah (Jane) Jones (b. 1857 in PA d. unknown) Jemmimah Jones (b. 1859 in PA d. unknown) David Jones (b. 1861 in PA d. unknown) Joseph Jones (b. 1865 in PA d. unknown) I descened through Ann. Obviously, that is why I know more about her. Do you think you are related? Lloyd ***************** Please provide additional information regarding the family of David Jones especially children names. Thank you. Father Theobald Mathew (1790-1856) was an Irish priest who started a movement where people would pledge total abstinence from alcohol. At its height, the temperance movement enrolled three million people, representing more than half the adult population of Ireland. The Father Mathew movement became popular on the other side of the Atlantic as well. I believe a number of victims of the Mud Run Disaster were members of the Father Mathew Society. If you want to know a bit more, you can do a search on Amazon.com and there are two recent books on Father Mathew (remember, one "t" and it's his surname), though they are both a little pricey. There's also an out-of-print 1945 biography that's available used. If that's a bit of overkill, another option is to go to the NY Times' website (_www.nytimes.com_ (http://www.nytimes.com) ) and check out their archive under "father theobald mathew." There are a number of hits that provide some background information, including a review of the 1945 biography. If you are a New York Times subscriber, you can get something like 100 downloads per month at no additional charge. There is a charge for everyone else, but I don't believe it's very high. Hope this helps. Neal Moran **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Hello, Does anyone know where I might find the 1901 issues of the Carbondale Leader Newspaper? It seems the Penn. State Library is missing these issues. I am looking for the death notice of Margaret Pidgeon Feb. 25 1901 (b. 1842). Thank You Paul Harmon
Hello, Does anyone have info on the Father Matthew Society? From what I can deduce it was a temperance society, but I know little more than that. Many past relatives were members, and my G-G-Grandfather (Andrew Pidgeon) was President for several years. I would welcome any additional info. Thank you Paul Harmon

This is for State Library users: I wonder if any of you Scranton researchers who are regularly working at the State Library would be willing to take a look at the actual Scranton Times for a few days around the death date of my great-grandmother Mary McDade, Mrs. Dennis McDade, of 236 S. Apple St., Dunmore PA. She died April 10, 1895. I tried to order the microfilm through ILL for this time period, and was told that they, the State Library, "do not own the Scranton Times microfilm for the following dates, April 1-June 29, 1895." My cousin, who lives in PA, tried to order a lookup through the Scranton Public Library and was told that their film for that period is missing. Thanks to the efforts of a lister, I have the notice for April 11, 1895, that appeared in the Scranton Tribune. I am most grateful to have that, but would also like to know if there is any more detail in the Times, if, in fact, anything appears there. Thank you. Hello List, I've been away for a while, but recently viewed the EXCELLENT Washburn Cemetery Records. Richard Reese - if you're out there-- I would like to be in touch with Robert Reynolds. Could you help me locate him? I believe we are related by way of Amy Reynolds Elias. Hope to hear from someone. Thanks, Shawn Presner
Walt, I followed up on this obit based on information on the Lackawanna pages about people from Ireland. Do you know if LIEUTENANT O'HARA was from Foxford? Jim The Scranton Times, Saturday March 18, 1944 LIEUTENANT O'HARA KILLED IN ACTION IN EUROPEAN WAR ZONE Lieut. Robert B. O'Hara, twenty-four, son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. O'Hara, formerly of Dickson City, was killed in action last Nov. 11 in the European theater, according to word received from the War Department. Lieutenant O'Hara, pilot of an American bomber, had seen service on a number of missions over Germany. He was a cousin of Machinist's Mate George Doherty, Dickson Ditty, presumed killed in the Battle of Sante Cruz in October 1942, and also of Capt. William F. O'Hara was was marooned on the Greenland ice cap for three months. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Hi, I came across this lost relative in Williamsport. He was from Dunmore. Maybe someone knows more about him and his branch of my tree. I would love to hear from you if you have any information. Regards, Ken MacMillan >From 9-28-2004 online edition of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette: Beverly J. MacMillan, 89, of 1612 Blair St., died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004. Born Nov. 6, 1914, in Olyphant, he was the son of Robert F. and Blanche Capwell MacMillan. Mr. MacMillan retired from the I.R.S. in 1971, having served as an internal revenue agent in Philadelphia and Williamsport, and was a conferee in the Washington appellate office at the time of his retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion, Garrett Cochran Post #1. He was a member and elder at Covenant-Central Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Hughes, two sons, J. Lawrence of Scituate, Mass., and Robert C. of Weymouth, Mass., and two granddaughters. Mr. MacMillan requested to be cremated and his ashes placed in the family plot in the Dunmore Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Covenant Central Presbyterian Church, 807 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Woody Allabough, officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval Funeral Home, a "Life Celebration Home."
There has been some discussion on and off the list about this project. Q: IS THIS ALL OF THE BURIALS IN WASHBURN STREET, OR IS IT AN ONGOING PROJECT? A: It is an ongoing project. The next target for an update would be 5,000 total names, an increase of 1,300. Q: HOW FAR ALONG IS THIS EFFORT? A: To give you an idea how far along this is, consider that if the project were based only upon reading all of the Scranton newspapers from 1860 to 2007; then with 349 months worth read, it works out to just about 1/6 of the way. Of course that is not quite accurate as there are multiple newspapers [The Tribune, Republican, Truth and Times are the four majors] and not all obits appeared in any one newspaper, but it is a good approximation. Of course in recent years, burials in the cemetery have been less than 2 a month, but back in the early 1900's, it averaged over one burial a day. I'd expect somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 as a conservative guess on the number of interments in Washburn. Q: HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE OR HELP? A: As with any project of this size, help would be welcomed. The key is having access to the information. If you had inter-library loan available, you can participate by reading one roll of film and transcribing the information. Also, should you ever get to visit the cemetery, writing down a few tombstones next to where your family is buried would be of great assistance. A third method would be to use the LDS films on "Death Registrations from the Scranton Board of Health" to contribute a years worth of burial information. Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? A: Have you ever tried reading old newspapers on microfilm? The process can be very time consuming, taking typically one hour for each week of papers, sometimes longer. Older newspapers on film are usually of poorer quality, and the obits and death notices can be anywhere. It took four years for one person to collect and enter 2,200 obits. In summation, it takes only two qualities to contribute to this project: A willingness to do a roll of film, and access to it. Any VOLUNTEERS?
Thanks, Rich. I am out of state, so will have to see if I can find someone to do a look-up. I know my local library would not have access to inter-library loans. Negative, Ruth. Although I did pull a lot information from each obit, it was intended to only identify the deceased properly. Yes, the newspapers are available through Inter-Library Loan from the PA State Library in Harrisburg, PA. Check with your local library to see if they participate. The newspaper is also available for use at the Scranton Public Library, the libraries at Penn State at State College, East Stroudsburg University and Bloomsburg University, and should be in the collection of the Philadelphia Public Library and Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh.
