Hi Walt: I see that you are researching the Cummings line. Do you have a Bridget Coolican Cummings in your line? She is listed as a daughter in the will of Patrick Coolican who died in Archbald 1883. I have no other info on her. Have often wondered if she went by more than one forename. The nearest would have been Washburn Street. However it depends greatly on the time period. My best guess based on my newspaper research is that less than 1 out of 5 of Welsh ancestry in that section (all 3 wards of Providence as it is difficult to tell from newspapers what the ward of residence was) were placed in Washburn. Most ended up in Dunmore or Forest Hills until the late 1920's when Shady Lane and Abington Hills were opened, then the balance changed. However as I only transcribe Washburn information, it is only a best guess. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jana Lloyd" <jlloyd@tgn.com> To: <palackaw@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2008 11:49 AM Subject: Re: [PALACKAW] PALACKAW Digest, Vol 3, Issue 44 : : : It sounds like there are some people on this list who are very : knowledgeable about cemeteries in Scranton. My Grandfather, Maurice Nelson Cole, was born 21 July 1895 in Waverly, Lackawanna Co. His father, Ward Beecher Cole disappeared about 1900, give or take a few years--no one in the family knows what happened to him. Maurice is shown in 1920 census as married to Francico, with two children, and in the WWI draft registration he claims a wife. The 1930 census indicates that he is then married to Rena Warner, my maternal grandmother. Does anyone have any information or ideas as to who Francico was, what happened to her, where she's buried? Is this Maurice even the same as my grandfather? And, any hints about what might have become of Ward Beecher Cole? I hope someone can help me, as I live in south central New Mexico, and getting back to do my own research is a mite difficult. Thanks! Allan Leslie
Allan, So nice to hear from you. I am the Warner Family Historian. I know that your Mother and Aunt Joyce have been looking for information about Ward Cole a few years ago, have you asked them what they found? Let me know if you still need more information and I will see what I can find this summer. Hello, My gg-grandfather died in the Avalon mine disaster. While researching that site, I discovered that his wife was also buried there. The site gives the date of the obituary as 4-18-1927. Her name was Dinah Evans, and her date of death is listed as 4-16-1927. Her address is also listed - 310 Third Street, Olyphant. Her husband was John D. Evans. They were both from Wales Thanks for your help with this. Susan
Would anyone have this film? Could you please also look for Rosaltha (Sisco) Croop? She was alive in 1900 - gone in 1910. According to the family, she died of TB. I have been unable to locate a date of death. Thank you ever much. On Apr 6, 2008, at 4:27 PM, Richard M. Roger, The Genealogical Research Sociey has ALL Scranton deaths from 1878 to 1906 in-house on film. We will check the index and, if found, send the document to you. Joe Bryer www.grsnp.org I have just discovered my ggg grandmother Elizabeth Thomas living in Scranton in the 1880 census, age 59, widowed at home. What you need is a lookup in the LDS film " Records of the Board of Health, City of Scranton - Deaths, 1878-1905" which is available through the LDS, and is in the collection at the Scranton Public Library. I do not have access to this film at this time, but there should be listers out there who might be able to assist. Where she lived in Scranton would determine the cemetery in which she is most likely buried. I do not list her in the data collected (so far) for Washburn Street, where the plurality of Welsh are buried. If she wasn't Catholic, and did not live in Hyde Park (wards 4, 5, 14,15), then she could be in Forest Hills or Dunmore if she lived in Providence (wards 1, 2, 3) or Green Ridge (ward13). If she was in Lackawanna Twp., then I would check out Forest Home cemetery, Taylor. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger Davies" <roger.davies55@virgin.net> To: <PALACKAW@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 9:54 AM Subject: [PALACKAW] Scranton deaths c 1880 : I have just discovered my ggg grandmother Elizabeth Thomas living in Scranton in the 1880 census, age 59, widowed at home. Thanks for this Ralph, but unfortunately not my lot. Thomas is a very common name in Wales. Because of the patronymic naming system they used until about 1800, about 90% of Welsh people share 40 surnames. It certainly makes genealogy a bit of a challenge! Lynn, The Lackawanna County Marriage License Bureau is part of the Orphan's Court of Lackawanna County. I suspect the reason has to do with the fact that, in olden days, when the breadwinner (The man) died the children were considered Orphans..Women did not work outside of the home. Having the marriage documents in the same office as the Orphans court records made it much easier to prove the claim of the brother of the deceased man as to his right to be declared guardian of the minor children.thereby keeping the widow and her children from being a burden to the county. Or, as was often thought, preventing her from falling into the oldest profession to support her children. Consider, the widow and her children were evicted from their company home if the deceased was a cola miner living in company housing...The brother, who may have also lived in company housing was able to have the widow and her children live with him in company housing since he was the guardian of these children. I hope this answers your question. Hi Everyone, I am new to the list after a long hiatus and would like to start with a general question. I have my grandmother's and her brother's marriage license application from Scranton, PA. The license if from the Clerk of the Orphans' Court of Lackawanna. Both my grandmother and her brother were adults at the time of the marriage and their parents were living so they were not orphans. My grandmother married in 1897 and her brother in 1902. Question: Were all marriage licenses issued through the Clerk of the Orphans' Court of Lackawanna County or should I look for another reason? I guess the next question is why would the Orphans' Court handle marriage licenses? All help is appreciated. Regards, Lynn Eivers
