I'll be interested to know what you think of it. It's about the Crossmolina connection. The obituary of my gggm, Jane Flynn, (1810-1893) gives her place of birth as Crossmolina, Ireland. In the 1860 census, she--widowed in Ireland--is listed with her five teenage and young adult children, her stepson John Flynn, and two young men who I have assumed were boarders: a James Healey and Edward Hagerty, who is 23 years old. Soon afterwards, Jane's daughter Hannah marries an Edward Haggerty (I assume the same fellow). I do not have a marriage record, but have 1870 census information detailing four daughters born to the couple, including my grandmother Kate, in 1868. Soon afterwards, Hannah appears to be living with her brother's family and is listed under her own name. Sometime in the early 1870s , she remarries. So, what if Edward Haggerty is not just a boarder, but a friend from Ireland? Family lore reports Jane being from Falcarragh, Co. Donegal, but that might have been the home of her second husband James Flynn, and not necessarily where she lived her life. It may also be connected with her trip from Ireland to America. I have been unable to find Edward's name is late 1860s mine accidents; I do not know how or exactly when he died. I am assuming he died young because divorce would have been close to unthinkable for this Irish Catholic clan. The Luzerne Co. Cthse. has early death records only back to 1893. Can you make anything of all this? I'm getting a little confused writing it, so I can imagine what reading it is like--thanks for your message, Anne

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] The Providence Register, Sat., June 13, 1914
    2. However it happened, it must have been a tragedy. Reading these old papers, the mining and railway accidents alone are appalling, not to mention the high child mortality and premature deaths of young adults from diseases we can now fix with a prescription of antibiotics. The item certainly gives you specificity about her death. Anne

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] The Providence Register, Sat., Sept. 19, 1914
    2. Hi Mary--that James Flynn obit certainly caught my eye, too. Don't know that there's a connection since, according to my data from you, I have gggm Jane Flynn's stepson John with a DOD of July 19, 1892 (he's the one who died unexpectedly while visiting in Ireland). Then I have James Flynn, d. Dec. 27, 1901, a son of Jane's, and the older brother of Enos Flynn. So I cannot place this James Flynn, but there were, I believe seven of them (old enough to be listed in the city dir. or census--I forget which) in Scranton around 1890-1900, so confusion is inevitable. I guess it's helpful to know who he isn't, even if we don't know who he is! I'll be interested in any followup that helps clarify. Anne

    3. I can think of two reliable and easy to check resources - each yearly newspaper almanac, and each Scranton City Directory listed the city and county officials. In addition the newspaper almanacs published election vote totals [which included the loosing candidates as well as the winners]. The alamancs are held at the Lackwanna Historical Society, Catlin House, 232 Monroe Ave., Scranton, and span from the mid 1880's to 1938. The city directories exist in a few places around the US such as the National Archives in Washington, The PA State Library in Harrisburg (1861-1935), Scranton Public (of course), the NEPaGRS and Albany, NY. For many years Scranton council was divided into two chambers, select and common. Many early minutes of Scranton city council meetings are held on microfilm at the PA State Archives in Harrisburg and were often published in newspapers such as the Tribune or Republican in the years before 1910. -----Original Message----- From: Gtbaar@aol.com <Gtbaar@aol.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, June 15, 2001 7:20 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] George W. 2. Dear Marge, Thank you for your kind words. I have been "digging" for facts about my family for almost ten years now and I know how wonderful it is to actually find something. I had promised myself a long time ago that, if I could help someone else who was doing some "digging," I would. Since I live only 15 miles from Scranton, I am happy to help out if I can. Good luck in your search. Iva

    3. Anne, I've appreciated your posts and saved them in case I get connections to those lines later. Where were your HAGGERTYs from? My ggrandmother was Mary HAGERTY from the Crossmolina parish in Mayo. Her three daughters, Mary, Agnes and Catherine came over some time after the turn of the century and settled in Scranton. They were GILROYs. Mary HAGERTY married Patrick GILROY in Mayo. Catherine was my grandmother, married William HEALEY, they had William HEALEY (my dad), who had William HEALEY (me). 2. Dear Robyn, I took a ride to Scranton today and, while there, I looked for your James (Jacobum) Golden. I am sorry to report that I could find nothing. Then it occurred to me that Avoca, where he lived, is in Luzerne County, not Lackawanna. So I came down to our library here in Wilkes-Barre and searched the Times-Leader from May 18, 1928 to May 25, 1928. Unfortunately, no luck! We had another newspaper in town in those days, called the Wilkes-Barre Morning Record. When I get a chance, I will go back to the library to see if the Record has anything at all about his death. It may be a couple of weeks, though, as I am off for Baltimore on Sunday to visit my daughter and her family. I will get back to you, I promise. I hope that you had a wonderful time in Ireland! Iva

    2. I obtained the certificate number and Naturalization date for my gg grandfather in Scranton. I then sent to Philadelphia INS for the record. Would anyone know if this record is anywhere in Scranton? Robert Gay certificate # 2951181 Volume 8 September 27, 1912 Thank you for any help. Karen Aten Hillman

    3. Hi Mary: I too was intriqued with this entry on James Flynn. I checked my software, but had only one James Flynn, born about 1926, so it could not be he. If you get any more data, I would appreciate it. Glad the information Luke Gilmartin was on target. Someday, perhaps you could give me a run down. You realize that the Gilmartin's figure in with the Judge's and Walsh's, so we are both interested, as well as with the Flynn's. Happy hunting. Bob.
